Location: Barnsley Academy, Farm Road, Barnsley, S70 3DL

Salary: FTE £24,978 per annum gross (pro‑rated actual: £23,762.72).

Contract: Permanent, Full‑time 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, term time + 4 weeks.

Working hours: 7.5 hours per day between 07:30 and 18:00, agreed term‑by‑term.

Overview

The role provides comprehensive administrative support across all departments to ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations. The General Administrator serves as the central point of contact for staff, students, parents and external stakeholders, delivering high‑quality service while upholding accuracy and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcome visitors warmly and ensure safeguarding compliance.
  • Take incoming calls, direct callers, take accurate messages, screen calls, prioritise, and communicate messages promptly.
  • Liaise with stakeholders including external agencies, parents and members of the public.
  • Maintain a tidy reception area and work with the Facilities team to distribute deliveries promptly.
  • Maintain meeting and conference rooms, resetting areas after each meeting.
  • Process and maintain school records and documentation via Arbor MIS.
  • Provide basic first aid support to students and staff when required, following procedures and accurately recording incidents.
  • Prepare letters for parents, perform photocopying, and support reception duties.
  • Assist the Office Coordinator with day‑to‑day operational administration tasks.

Qualifications

  • Reliable, highly motivated and self‑driven.
  • Proactive, using own initiative and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience in reception and/or administrative or customer‑services work in a busy environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, high standards and pride in work.
  • Experience in First Aid or willingness to undertake training.
  • Team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with all members of the school community.
