This role is aimed at qualified actuaries with strong experience in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) who are looking to take a leading role in client consulting.
You will be responsible for developing and managing your own portfolio of LGPS clients, with scope to act as a Team Leader, overseeing delivery, governance activity and working closely with Partners to set priorities and drive client strategy.
You will join a growing team with strong demand for LGPS actuarial and governance work, including new regulatory‑driven projects.
The role offers broad exposure from funding strategy, employer risk and asset pooling through to governance support, employer transitions and statutory reporting.
Strong organisational skills, commercial awareness and the ability to lead and develop others will be key.
Responsibilities
- Act as the main contact for a range of LGPS Pension Funds and employers, providing advice.
- Build strong relationships with and gain detailed knowledge about clients.
- Manage a client team, ensuring work is of a high quality and within agreed timescales.
- Support Partners in managing client relationships, identifying problems and helping resolve them promptly.
- Attend client meetings and identify ways to help clients, reporting new initiatives.
- Lead internal working groups covering specialist topics such as LGPS accounting or governance.
- Use a variety of techniques and principles to assess risk linked to all areas of LGPS pensions.
- Check work of other team members, ensuring accuracy and compliance with LGPS regulations.
- Provide advice to clients on how they might achieve their objectives while satisfying the needs of all stakeholders.
- Actively look for opportunities to support clients with other BW/Howden services.
- Present internally to the team and externally to clients, giving external talks as required.
- Assist with new business opportunities, including supporting tenders and pitch processes.
Qualifications
- Qualified actuary – Fellowship Actuarial Qualification (FIA/FAA) or equivalent.
- Experience in DB pensions.
- Demonstrated experience leading a team with excellent people management skills.
- Good IT skills.
- Project management and time management skills.
- Excellent communication skills and good networking skills.
- Ability to take forward new ideas.
- A willingness to communicate and pass on knowledge and develop junior members of the team.
