As IT Infrastructure Team Manager, you will lead the Infrastructure team in delivering secure, reliable and high-performing IT systems and platforms across all College sites. You will be responsible for day-to-day infrastructure operations, technical delivery and team management, covering servers, cloud platforms, networks, core systems, cyber security and disaster recovery. You will act as the escalation point for complex incidents, drive service improvement and provide strong technical input into projects and operational decisions.
The College is continuing to modernise and strengthen its infrastructure services, with active work across Microsoft 365, cloud services, cyber security, device management and service resilience. You will have the opportunity to contribute to improvement projects, shape operational standards and help plan the department's future technology direction, all within a collaborative team culture that values practical problem-solving and continuous improvement.
What You'll Be Doing
- Infrastructure operations: Manage the delivery and operation of the College's IT infrastructure including servers, cloud platforms, networks and core systems, ensuring high availability, performance and resilience at all times.
- Incident management and escalation: Act as the technical escalation point for complex infrastructure incidents and problems, supporting root cause analysis and implementing preventative measures to improve service reliability.
- Cyber security and resilience: Ensure infrastructure services are maintained securely, implement and maintain security controls in line with College standards, support cyber security audits and lead the preparation and regular testing of the IT disaster recovery plan.
- Team leadership: Line manage IT Infrastructure Engineers, setting objectives, monitoring performance and conducting reviews. Lead, coach and develop team members and allocate workload effectively across the team.
- Technical projects: Lead the delivery of infrastructure solutions and provide technical input into College projects, ensuring infrastructure choices meet operational requirements and support wider service goals.
- Service delivery and collaboration: Work closely with the IT Support Team Manager to ensure effective end-to-end service delivery, contribute to service performance monitoring and maintain a customer-focused approach with stakeholders across the College.
- Documentation and standards: Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation including system configurations, operational procedures and change control records, and promote high standards and continuous improvement within the team.
What You'll Bring
- A Level 3 qualification in an IT-related subject
- Evidence of continuing professional development in IT systems
- Experience of working in a technology systems role
- Excellent knowledge of networking including TCP/IP, LAN and WAN
- Demonstrable recent experience in the development, support, configuration and troubleshooting of IT infrastructure and services
- Proven technical experience with a wide range of server hardware, virtualisation and application technologies (e.g. Microsoft 365, Active Directory/Azure AD, Cisco, VMWare, Hyper-V, backup management, cloud and emerging technologies)
- Experience of administering Active Directory and Microsoft Office 365
- Experience of implementing change and leading technical teams
- Experience of project management
- Proven ability to provide leadership, vision and motivation to others
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including written and numerical skills for effective reporting
- Ability to work under pressure, prioritise effectively and deliver to deadlines
- Enthusiasm for creative innovation, embracing change and continuous improvement
- Willingness to work across all College sites and flexibly as required
- Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion and safeguarding
Even Better If You Have...
- Industry-recognised professional certification in one or more of: Windows Server, SQL Server, Office 365 administration, Cisco, VMWare, storage area networks, SCCM/Intune
- A management qualification
- Experience of management in a service capacity
- Experience of working to ITIL or other quality management systems (e.g. ISO9001)
- Knowledge and experience of the education sector
- Experience of implementing and administering G Suite, Apple School Manager, Jamf, Papercut, Veeam or Adobe Creative Cloud
- Knowledge of MacOS and Linux system administration
- Business analysis and case writing experience
