The Role
To be trained to operate and inspect work from 3 or more machines for the manufacture of aero engine components.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and load components in fixture using correct datum faces
- When operating machines carry out work in line with appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs) and company procedures
- When the machining cycle is complete, remove, clean, and inspect the part
- Maintain correct working order of the machine, by making appropriate adjustments to tooling and coolant flow as and when required
- Liaise with Inspection to check first off before starting full batch run
- Use appropriate hand tools to deburr work
- Visually Inspect and measure components to ensure compliance with specification
- Use optical, manual, electronic, digital gauges and tooling as supplied
- Calibrate and operate micro-PCRs (programmed measurement instruments) – in accordance with planning requirements
- Carry out inspections on other operators’ work – especially those not qualified to inspect their own work e.g., operators undergoing training
- Complete manual and PC based production records, recording components completed and identifying those not conforming to specification on "non-conformance notes". Stamp "OK" or enter into the paperless manufacturing centre (PLMC)
- Segregate non-conforming parts. Take completed batch to next operation
- Assist with training and mentoring of new team members, in line with individual competence
- Maintain work area in a clean and safe condition, report any problems to cell supervision, cell manufacturing support operative (MSO) and/or Maintenance
- Maintain machines in a running condition by changing consumables as required. e.g., cutters, grinding wheels and electrodes
- Hand finish components to planning requirements
- Demonstrate and promote in-cell standardisation by maintaining: health & safety, 6S, SOPs, daily check sheets, front line asset care, machine first off procedures and date calibration checks
- Book off work in accordance with all production and quality requirements.
Job Requirements
- Meeting daily production targets whilst maintaining quality standards
- Ability to work a range of shifts
- NVQ 1 - Mechanical Engineering (desired not essential)
- Relevant safety certificates e.g., grinding wheel certification (desired not essential)
- Manual handling training may be appropriate in some areas
- Ability to use measuring instruments e.g., vernier, gauges, micrometres, and electronic gauges (training will be provided)
- 6 months experience preferable but not essential
- Knowledge of cutter characteristics and tool life advantageous
- Ability to follow company planning and procedures and recognize abbreviations/symbols

Shift Schedule
The main full time shift in which we run at Newton Abbot is:
- Days – 6:30am - 2:30pm Monday to Thursday, 6:30 - 12:30 Friday (for 4 weeks)
- Mids – 2:00pm - 10:00pm Monday to Thursday, 12:00pm - 6:00pm Friday (for 4 weeks)
- Nights – 9:30pm - 7:00am Monday to Thursday (for 4 weeks)
