The role of the School Nurse in Barnardo's Health Quality & Inclusion team is a national hybrid position working across the organisation. Are you a Specialist Community Public Health (SCPHN) School Nurse driven by a desire to make a difference to the lives of children, young people, and families? We are looking for an experienced Nursing Midwifery Council registered professional to help us achieve our purpose at Barnardo's: Changing Childhoods, Changing Lives.

Barnardo's has a new 3-year strategy, which identifies the need to support those children and young people who are at greatest risk of poor health. Barnardo's national Health Quality and Inclusion Team are integral to ensuring the success of this strategy. Job responsibilities

The role will have a national reach (UK 5-19, 25 SEND), working alongside a Healthy Child Programme Manager and reporting directly to the Strategic Lead for Health Visiting and School Nursing. The role will contribute to the future development of public health offers from across the charity, supporting areas such as Barnardo's Virtual Family Space, Barnardo's Education Community and our Mental Health team.

You will work as part of an integrated HQI team that consists of expert specialist health professionals to support the Consultant in Public Health and Strategic Programme Delivery Leads with their development and delivery of a variety of programmes of work to implement our strategy. Barnardo's is an integrated children's health and social care charity, with the aim to increase the reach of health, social and wellbeing services and reduce health inequalities for children and young people (CYP).

The role of the School Nurse within the HQI team requires overall understanding and recent extensive clinical experience in delivering the 5-19 (25 SEND) element of the Healthy Child Programme. The practitioner should be skilled at delivering integrated child and family health services for CYP, while working alongside key stakeholders.

With a focus on school nursing, adolescence and care leavers, the range and scope of services will include both face-to-face and digital delivery methods, both in place and under development. The postholder will support the ongoing provision of high-quality specialist school nursing interventions for children, young people, and their families/carers.

The position will support and develop new and existing partnerships that deliver public health content for school age children services. Leading on the design, delivery and modernisation of service change across care groups, specialisms, and health-related settings (such as family hubs). There is an expectation that the registered professional will be knowledgeable and have a comprehensive understanding of local and national health-related policies, ensuring that they remain fully abreast of these. This role will also be required to provide selected help and expertise to children's service colleagues as a specialism expert.

  • Evidence of utilising evidence-based practice and appraising standards, providing clinical direction for staff.
  • Expert knowledge of school nursing and safeguarding policy and procedures and assessment and analysis of vulnerable children and families.
  • Experience of using initiative and leading change to achieve better outcomes for children.
Qualifications
  • Registered with the NMC RN & SCPHN School Nurse (SN).
  • Understanding of public health and health promotion for CYP.
  • Understanding of current local and national government health policies and the implications on health provision for CYP.
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
  • Leadership or management qualification or equivalent recent experience in a leadership position.
