This role requires a deep understanding of public health principles and health inequalities. You will apply an evidence‑based approach to design, implement and evaluate strategies that reduce health disparities among children, young people and families, thereby improving the inclusivity of Barnardo’s programmes and the overall wellbeing of underserved populations.

As Consultant in Public Health / Public Health Medicine you will lead the Public Health and Health Inequalities team, develop Barnardo’s evidence‑based public health portfolio and work closely with senior leadership to promote a just and inclusive healthcare system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the conceptualisation, design and implementation of public health programmes focused on children, young people and families, ensuring alignment with local and national health priorities.
  • Apply best practice, evidence‑based approaches to develop and deliver targeted interventions that promote the physical, mental and social wellbeing of vulnerable populations.
  • Provide expert guidance on child and family health issues, informing policy decisions and promoting evidence‑informed decision‑making.
  • Develop a public health vision for Barnardo’s and identify growth opportunities.
  • Line‑manage the Programme Manager for Health Inequalities and the Strategic Lead for Health Visiting within the Public Health and Health Inequalities Team.
  • Deputise for the Director of Health.
  • Represent Barnardo’s at regional and national events to promote integrated health and social care services.
  • Co‑ordinate highly complex programmes of work with high‑profile stakeholders.
  • Support the implementation of change management programmes across the organisation.
How You’ll Work

Hybrid working, with attendance at face‑to‑face team meetings (usually in London). Attendance at events outside normal working hours or travel may be required. Flexible working arrangements are available; personal circumstances will be considered.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Current inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register, GDC Specialist List or UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists.
  • For those in other specialties, equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health medicine practice.
  • Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the register must provide evidence they are within 6 months of gaining entry at the interview date.
  • UK‑trained public health professionals must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award. Non‑UK trained professionals must provide evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
  • Up‑to‑date CPD in accordance with Faculty of Public Health requirements or another recognised body.
  • Masters in Public Health or equivalent.
  • Significant experience in designing, implementing and evaluating public health interventions and programmes, with a focus on children, young people and families.
  • Proven expertise in health inequalities, health disparities and social determinants of health.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and managing multidisciplinary teams and coordinating complex programmes.
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to use qualitative and quantitative data to inform policies and programmes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including media engagement, and effective interpersonal, motivational and influencing skills.
  • Commitment to social justice, health equity and improving the wellbeing of underserved populations.
Salary & Benefits

£66,014.18 to £76,357.39 a year. Office at home allowance £312 per annum.
