SALARY: £28,000 - £30,000 per annum (dependent on experience), plus benefits.

LOCATION: Cirencester

The Barn Theatre is looking to employ an experienced and proactive Producer to work closely with the Executive Director, Executive Producer and wider Producing Team across the Barn Theatre’s programme of in-house productions, transfers, tours and commercial developments. This is a senior producing role with responsibility for the development, delivery and ongoing management of productions from initial idea through to post-production and future life. The Producer will play a key role in maintaining the Barn Theatre’s reputation for high-quality, artist-led work, delivered on time, on budget and to the highest professional standards.

The role will suit a confident, highly organised and collaborative individual with strong commercial awareness, excellent communication skills and a deep understanding of producing within the UK theatre industry. The role is primarily based at the Barn Theatre in Cirencester, with regular travel to London and touring venues as required.

Responsibilities

• Project Development
  • Identify scripts, source material and creative ideas suitable for production at the Barn Theatre.
  • Work with the Executive Producer to secure rights for plays and musicals.
  • Collaborate with writers and directors to develop scripts and concepts.
  • Oversee workshops, readings and research & development periods.
• Budgeting & Finance
  • Draft initial production budgets and maintain accurate, up-to-date payment schedules.
  • Monitor and manage production spend during pre-production, rehearsals and the run.
  • Approve purchases and supplier payments, in collaboration with the Production Manager.
  • Conduct weekly payment runs and manage budget codes.
  • Support the creation of revised and future budgets.
  • Develop and maintain rate cards and holiday pay calculators.
  • Reconcile production costs post-closing and report to the Executive Team.
• Scheduling & Logistics
  • Set production timelines from first meeting to closing night with the Executive Producer.
  • Coordinate rehearsals, production meetings, technical rehearsals and fit-ups with the Production Manager and Company Stage Manager.
  • Oversee get-in, get-out and touring logistics where applicable.
  • Resolve company needs during runs, including accommodation, travel and welfare logistics.
  • Liaise with General Managers and producing partners across co-productions.
• Creative Team Management
  • Co-assemble and approve creative teams alongside the Artistic Director, Executive Producer and Commercial Producer.
  • Ensure all creative, cast and crew contracts are properly negotiated and executed.
  • Manage relationships between creative, production and administrative teams.
  • Support the Director’s artistic vision while maintaining budgetary and scheduling discipline.
  • Provide cover for Company Management during absences when required.
  • Carry out availability checks for creatives and key personnel.
• Contracts & Legal
  • Draft contracts for creatives, cast and crew.
  • Create, maintain and update contract templates.
  • Negotiate post-contract details with agents and representatives.
  • File and store contracts systematically.
  • Maintain accurate contract tracking and status systems.
  • Ensure compliance with Equity, BECTU and UK Theatre agreements.
  • Manage insurance, rights clearances and safety obligations.
  • Oversee royalties, advances and profit share arrangements as applicable.
• Marketing & Communications
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Press teams on campaign strategy.
  • Approve artwork, press releases and copy.
  • Attend press nights and represent productions publicly.
  • Communicate production content clearly to ensure marketing aligns with creative identity and target audiences.
  • Support the gathering of materials for programmes and programme redesigns.
• Production Delivery
  • Attend production meetings and rehearsals to monitor progress.
  • Approve design concepts, budgets and technical plans.
  • Resolve issues during build, rehearsals and previews.
  • Make key decisions under pressure to keep productions on track.
  • Ensure productions open on time, within budget and to agreed quality standards.
  • Facilitate post-production evaluations and reviews.
  • Oversee productions once open, monitoring financial performance, ticket sales and audience feedback.
  • Approve running costs and post-opening changes with the Executive Producer.
  • Manage company morale and communication alongside the Company Stage Manager.
  • Liaise with Marketing and PR teams throughout the run.
  • Close productions efficiently and reconcile all accounts.
  • Plan and coordinate the future life of productions — including tours, transfers and revivals — in collaboration with the Executive Producer.

Person Specification

• Proven experience as a Producer within a comparable producing theatre or commercial producing environment.
• Strong financial literacy with demonstrable experience managing and delivering complex production budgets.
• Excellent organisational and administrative skills with high attention to detail.
• Confident communicator with the ability to manage and support creative teams effectively.
• Calm, solution-focused and able to make clear decisions under pressure.
• Strong knowledge of UK theatre contracts, agreements and industry practice.
• Collaborative, personable and aligned with the Barn Theatre’s values and artistic ambition.
