G‑Research runs one of the largest and most influential Open‑Source Program Offices (OSPO) in the world, comprising 30–35 upstream engineers working across machine learning, big‑data systems, high‑performance computing (HPC), distributed systems, developer tooling and critical infrastructure. We are hiring a Deputy Head of Open‑Source Development to act as the senior in‑office leader for the programme, ensuring our open‑source contributions remain closely aligned with internal priorities and business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day‑to‑day engagement between the OSPO and internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment between open‑source contributions and business priorities.
  • Partner with the Head of Open‑Source Development to shape strategy, evaluate opportunities and prioritise work across Research, Machine Learning and Platform Engineering areas.
  • Build trusted relationships across engineering, research, architecture and leadership teams.
  • Identify emerging technical needs and translate them into actionable open‑source initiatives.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for new requests, managing requirements and stakeholder expectations.
  • Evaluate technologies, proof of concepts and research tooling to assess suitability and adoption opportunities.
  • Drive internal adoption of open‑source contributions, gathering feedback and coordinating improvements.
  • Promote awareness of OSPO’s capabilities, impact and strategic value across the firm.
  • Support governance, prioritisation, and portfolio management across the OSPO.
  • Maintain clear documentation, roadmaps and reporting to measure and communicate programme impact.

Qualifications

  • Strong engineering background across distributed systems, data platforms, machine learning, HPC infrastructure, developer tooling, or related domains.
  • Experience reviewing or writing production‑quality code, ideally in Python, C++, Java, Rust or Go.
  • Ability to navigate complex codebases and understand architecture‑level trade‑offs.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong relationship‑building skills and the ability to work effectively across technical and non‑technical groups.
  • Proven ability to operate in complex environments, influence without authority and manage competing priorities.
  • Pragmatic and resilient approach with strong judgement and a passion for open source.

Nice to Have

  • Experience contributing to open‑source projects or communities.
  • Experience in quantitative research, HPC, machine learning or regulated environments.
