Overall Purpose of Role: This role primarily involves managing the UK corporate tax compliance process for the Barings group, assisting with UK VAT compliance and identifying and implementing process efficiencies and control improvements.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Managing the UK corporation tax compliance process including:
- Preparation of UK corporation tax returns using Alphatax.
- Identification and implementation of process improvements to streamline the process of transferring the data from the accounting ledger into Alphatax.
- Work in connection with the preparation of the tax charge in the year end accounts.
- Calculation of quarterly instalment payments.
- Liaising with HMRC, including drafting responses to HMRC queries.
- Involvement in parent group reporting requirements.
- Managing the Irish corporation tax and VAT compliance processes including:
- Provision of information to local advisors who prepare the Irish corporation tax and VAT returns.
- Review and oversight of the work undertaken by local advisors.
- Oversight of outsourced tax compliance for European subsidiaries and branches.
- Assisting with UK VAT compliance including:
- Preparation of quarterly partial exemption VAT calculations.
- Responding to queries relating to posting and processing of VAT from the Accounts Payable and Corporate Accounting team.
- Preparing VAT reconciliations.
- Preparation of the UK PAYE Settlement calculations and submission of the return.
- Improvement of processes / implementation of controls including use of AI where appropriate.
- Responding to queries from the Corporate Accounting team and wider organisation with respect to corporate tax and VAT.
- Monitoring changes to tax legislation or tax authority practice and where appropriate, ensuring that the relevant Barings teams are informed.
Person Specification:
- Qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA/CTA or equivalent.
- Strong UK tax compliance experience covering both corporation tax and VAT with at least three years experience.
- Excellent Excel skills and ideally, experience of using AI to drive process efficiencies.
- Proactive and practical with an ability to document existing processes as well as identify and implement continuous improvements in relation to controls and processes.
- Ability to quickly understand new tax rules and the impact they can have on the business.
- Ability to articulate complex tax issues in a way that can be easily understood by non-tax colleagues.
- Methodical and organised individual with strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively prioritise work.
- Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a diverse range of people across the business so as to enable collegiate and effective interaction with other departments as well as with the Tax team.
- Familiarity with Country by Country reporting, BEPS Pillar 2, Corporate Interest Restriction rules and transfer pricing would be useful, though not a pre-requisite.
- Prior user experience of Alphatax and Workday would be an advantage.
- Relevant tax experience in the investment management sector would be preferable.
- Proven track record of implementing improvements in data migration would be useful.
