Role Overview: Provide daily commercial support to project delivery teams and senior management. The role supports the successful commercial management of civil engineering projects while developing technical, contractual and commercial skills within a collaborative team environment.

Role Purpose: To support the effective commercial delivery of projects by assisting with cost control, subcontract management, reporting and contractual compliance. The role contributes to accurate financial management, robust governance and value protection while developing the capability to progress within the commercial function.

Key Accountabilities

  • Commercial Management & Governance
    • Support the commercial management of projects in line with company procedures
    • Ensure compliance with company commercial procedures and corporate governance requirements
    • Carry out audits on contracts as required
    • Support the Managing Surveyor and Commercial Manager with accurate commercial data and reporting
  • Financial Performance
    • Monitor and control income and expenditure on contracts
    • Produce cost and value comparisons and turnover forecasts
    • Produce monthly commercial reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness
    • Produce cash flow forecasts for internal and client purposes
  • Contract & Risk Management
    • Produce and process formal subcontract documentation
    • Certify interim and final subcontract payments and final accounts
    • Produce bills of quantities and activity schedules for payment purposes
    • Monitor applications for payment, final accounts and late payments
    • Provide feedback on pricing, projected profit or loss and pricing omissions
  • Leadership & Capability
    • Support senior commercial staff in delivering project objectives
    • Actively develop commercial, contractual and technical skills
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry practices and procedures
    • Demonstrate a positive, proactive approach within project teams
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Engage with subcontractors, suppliers and client representatives
    • Attend financial and progress meetings where required
    • Provide advice and support to site teams to optimise contract resources
    • Work collaboratively with estimators, contract managers and site teams

Essential

  • Ability to use a range of IT packages, including Microsoft Office and bespoke packages
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the Construction process
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral & written
  • Negotiation skills and ability to apply those skills internally, externally & with our supply chain
  • Positive attitude always, and the ability to integrate and play an active part in the Construction Team
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise meeting deadlines

Desirable

  • Degree-qualified or equivalent, but with appropriate experience and knowledge
  • Wide experience of the civil engineering industry with a reasonable degree of water industry experience
  • CSCS card
