Head of HSEQ – The Role

As Head of HSEQ you will manage and support the HSEQ Managers and HSEQ Advisory Team within your area of control to meet the requirements of health, safety, environment and quality management systems. You will lead and champion HSEQ initiatives such as Be Healthy & Be Safe, Be Sustainable Be Green and Front Foot Safety plans, ensuring legislation is adhered to. Additionally, you will assist the HSEQ Director in developing and embedding HSEQ Management Systems and strategic actions at a corporate level to enable continual business improvement. You will also review our Health & Safety and Environmental Training Strategy, maintaining its structure and content to meet ongoing business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the provision of Occupational Health within the regions of control, promote monthly themes, and promote the value of Occupational Health & Wellbeing locally.
  • Manage and lead HSEQ Team Members for allocated areas of control, providing consistent and accurate leadership, support and advice.
  • Ensure regional HSEQ statistics are maintained and reported corporately to identify trends and determine proactive initiatives.
  • Deliver leadership and support for Be Right First‑Time initiatives and monitor Quality Control as defined by the HSEQ Systems & Audit Manager.
  • Act as the lead HSEQ representative for client support in your region; attend Client‑led HSEQ Forums and support lessons learned.
  • Contribute to company‑level communications, create lessons learned, and communicate HSEQ alerts following incidents and poor‑quality standards.
  • Prepare weekly HSEQ Flash Reports and support the HSEQ Director in maintaining monthly performance statistics.
  • Lead HSEQ investigations, define root causes, ensure actions support future prevention, and keep senior management informed.
  • Conduct regular leadership visits and perform two HSEQ inspections each month in your area of control.
  • Provide HSEQ management support for Facilities Managers at company premises on HSE‑related issues and provisions.

About You – Essential

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent, ideally IOSH.
  • CEnv (Chartered Environmentalist) or equivalent, ideally an associate ISEP.
  • Thorough knowledge of quality controls associated with company work.
  • Analytical skills to interpret detailed information and regulations.
  • High standard of written English.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to liaise effectively with staff and operatives at all levels.
  • Excellent MS Office skills—Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • CSCS Safety Professional card.
  • Leadership and mentoring skills, proven ability to develop the HSEQ team members and encourage independent work to meet tight deadlines.

About You – Desirable

  • SHE experience within a civil engineering environment and experience in the rail sector.
