About the Role

Our client, a London-based bank, is seeking an experienced Chief Risk Officer (CRO) to lead and oversee the bank’s enterprise-wide risk management framework. This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for ensuring the bank maintains a robust and effective approach to identifying, assessing, managing, and monitoring risk across the organisation. The CRO will work closely with the Board, Executive Committee, and senior leadership team, providing independent risk oversight and challenge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the bank’s overall risk management strategy and framework.
  • Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge across all material areas of risk.
  • Advise the Board and senior management on the bank’s risk profile, risk appetite, and emerging risks.
  • Maintain and oversee the Risk Appetite Framework (RAF) and ensure appropriate risk limits and controls are in place.
  • Oversee key risk disciplines including:
    • Credit Risk
    • Market Risk
    • Liquidity & Treasury Risk
    • Operational Risk
    • Conduct Risk
    • Compliance & Regulatory Risk
    • Financial Crime Risk
    • Technology & Cyber Risk
  • Ensure effective risk identification, assessment, monitoring, reporting, and escalation processes.
  • Oversee stress testing, scenario analysis, risk assessments, and relevant regulatory submissions.
  • Work closely with Finance, Treasury, Compliance, Internal Audit, Credit, and Business teams.
  • Ensure material risks and breaches are appropriately escalated to the Board and relevant committees.
  • Lead the development of risk policies, standards, controls, and governance frameworks.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and ensure the bank's risk framework evolves accordingly.
  • Promote a strong risk culture across the organisation.
  • Represent the Risk function at Board and senior management committees.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor the bank’s risk management team.

Candidate Requirements

  • Significant senior-level risk leadership experience within banking or financial services.
  • Previous experience operating at CRO, Deputy CRO, or equivalent senior risk leadership level.
  • Strong understanding of the UK banking regulatory environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge across multiple risk disciplines, particularly credit, market, liquidity, operational, and regulatory risk.
  • Strong understanding of risk governance, risk appetite, stress testing, and enterprise risk management.
  • Experience presenting to and advising Boards, Board Risk Committees, and senior executives.
  • Proven ability to provide independent challenge while working effectively with business and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory expectations and supervisory frameworks.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, influencing, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience leading and developing high-performing risk teams.
