To work as an autonomous practitioner within the Pelvic Health Service, situated in the Musculoskeletal Department at Chase Farm Hospital. To provide a highly specialised assessment and intervention for own varied caseload of outpatients within the speciality of Pelvic Health conditions, including patients who may have highly complex presentations, with the aim of facilitating short and long-term self-management approaches to their condition. To be involved in the development of the Pelvic Health Service in consultation with the MSK Service Lead, striving to ensure maximum efficiency, productivity and cost-effectiveness. To supervise, teach and appraise more junior, assistant and student physiotherapists as appropriate. To supervise, initiate and participate in evidence-based projects and lead in-service training sessions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own professional activities in line with the standards of the Trust, Department, Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • To have overall accountability for the planning and management of own complex and specialist caseload of patients and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To utilise advanced clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based knowledge to assess patients with highly complex presentations using a bio-psychosocial model and then to implement physiotherapy management plans as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To be able to explore complex and distressing personal histories, in a sensitive and supportive manner.
  • To continuously assess, evaluate and modify treatment aims, objectives and desired outcomes in collaboration with the patient, any carers, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • To use highly advanced communication and behaviour change skills to facilitate a long-term self-management approach with patients living with acute and/or chronic Pelvic Health conditions and pain.
  • To use cognitive behavioural principles to increase a patient’s functional capacity incorporating, as appropriate but not exclusive to, education, goal setting, exercise, relaxation techniques and activity management.
  • To be aware of issues affecting patients with pain (acute and/or chronic) with particular reference to facilitating access to specialist services, support mechanisms and exercise classes that are available within the community for groups from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
  • To clearly convey complex knowledge of pain mechanisms, anatomy, pathophysiology, effects of disuse and exercise to patients and staff, ensuring sensitivity to the audience’s level of understanding, including in a group setting.
  • To produce up-to-date, clear evidence-based resources for patients.
  • To ensure that patients have consented to physiotherapeutic interventions in line with the Trust and department ethico-legal policies and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Professional Code of Conduct.
  • To be responsible for ensuring written and electronic patient records are updated as required and statistical activity data records are produced in accordance with professional, departmental and Trust standards.
  • Professionally and legally responsible for provision of highly specialist physiotherapy assessment and intervention to individual patients with highly complex needs.

Requirements:

  • BSc Degree in Physiotherapy or Diploma or equivalent.
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration for profession.
  • Evidence or portfolio of post-graduate continued development in specialist clinical area.
  • Substantial postgraduate experience at a Band 6 level or equivalent including within specialist area.
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches for the management of patients within specialist clinical area.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary and interagency working.
  • Awareness of cognitive behavioural approaches to rehabilitation.
  • Experience of group work.
  • Previous experience of junior staff & student supervision/clinical education.
  • Experience of leading a team.
  • Experience of clinical audit or research.
  • Evidence of active involvement in service development & contribution to change within the workplace.
