Whittington Health NHS Trust are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 5 Endoscopy Nurse to join their highly skilled team. Whittington Health NHS Trust provides a wide range of health and care services, supporting patients, families and local communities in community health centres, GP clinics, dental practices across North Central London and beyond, at our hospital in Archway, and in patients' own homes.
The Role: To provide high standard of nursing care, and to actively participate in and contribute to the management of the Endoscopy Unit. The post holder is also expected to carry out all relevant forms of care with/without direct supervision, following appropriate training and will be required to demonstrate procedures to qualified and unqualified staff. Participate in the maintenance of endoscopes and other specialised equipment used in endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures and provide technical assistance during such procedures.
Main Duties:
- Be accountable for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of individual patient care.
- Undertake risk assessments to the patients that are going to have endoscopic procedures.
- Undertake nursing assessments, obtaining a detailed past medical history and ordering appropriate clinical investigations.
- Participate in the out of hours on-call rota for Gastrointestinal Bleed rota.
- Undertake face to face and telephone pre-assessment in the absence of the pre-assessment nurse to ensure patients are appropriately assessed for the procedure, offering support and advice as appropriate.
- Be part of the coordinator role when allocated, coordinating the unit across endoscopy rooms and recovery, maintaining a smooth and event‐less daily activity.
- Maintaining timely and accurate nursing records and ensuring that confidentiality is respected.
- Storing, checking and administering drugs in accordance with established standards and guidelines.
- Working with minimal supervision during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures.
- Support the Charge Nurse/Senior Sister to implement intervention based on the results of the assessment and investigations.
- Participate in team building and maintain effective communication with all members of the multi‐disciplinary team.
- Ensure that all equipment is maintained in safe working order and demonstrate a thorough understanding of how to use the equipment safely and effectively.
- Act as a health educator, educating patients, relatives, and carers.
- Carry out, when appropriate, the decontamination, transport and storage of sterile and non-sterile medical devices and the decontamination of the environment and the endoscopes.
The post holder will perform decontamination of instruments, medical devices and the environment effectively and safely, in accordance to local Trust and National Policies.
Requirements:
- Registered Nurse
- Documented evidence of CPD
- Willingness to undertake further training
- Able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles of managing and pre‐assess a group of patients
- Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills including good written and verbal communications
- Able to work within a multi-professional team
- Ability to problem-solve and to use own initiative
- Able to effectively teach unqualified staff and learners
- Able to assess a situation, set priorities and problem solve quickly and effectively
- Competent computer skills to create reports, use email, read Excel spreadsheets
- Knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance & a commitment to clinical supervision
- Knowledge of the individual's responsibility
- Substantial previous and current experience in taking care of acute and critically ill patients in a specialist acute care unit e.g. ITU, emergency, HDU and acute medical unit
- Previous and current experience in endoscopy
