St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts) are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 4 Rehab Support Worker to join their highly skilled team. Our group of hospitals provide a huge range of clinical services to people in east London and beyond. We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need.

The Role:

  • To provide skilled routine, and some non-routine, clinical and non-clinical support to the Therapy team.
  • To accept patient referrals to therapy (in accordance with departmental guidelines) and assess and treat according to protocols and guidelines monitoring patient progression, making alterations to patient treatment programs as required, and discharging when appropriate.
  • To maintain close communication with the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate patient care.
  • To provide clerical assistance to the team.
  • To actively participate in team and departmental in-service training.
  • Work alongside registered therapist in the induction of new staff.
  • To carry out other duties deemed necessary to ensure adequate provision of service.

Clinical / operational responsibilities

  • To accept patients allocated by the Therapists.
  • To gather and provide routine information both to and from patients, family, carers, hospital notes, other health care and community professionals.
  • To gain patient consent and be able to work within a legal framework with those patients who are unable to give informed consent.
  • To provide a support role in assisting the Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist or Therapy Assistant in performing functional assessments as needed.
  • To undertake routine functional assessments, with access to the Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist for support as required; and know when to refer back to the registered Therapist for assessment.
  • To use information gained from assessment to develop a problem list and proposed intervention options.
  • To action intervention as required following discussion with a registered therapist.
  • To prepare the patient for treatment by self or as directed by a therapist e.g. ensuring patient suitably dressed.
  • To be able to assess a patients’ response to activities and decide on appropriate action.
  • To carry out intervention and/or activities with individuals and groups, with access to supervision from a registered member of staff.
  • To participate with the Therapists in off site visits and to be able to independently complete the same.
  • Following appropriate training, to assess and monitor allocated patients for equipment in the home e.g. walking aids and Activities of daily living equipment.
  • To ensure the patients comfort needs are met after intervention e.g. drinks available as appropriate, provide means to contact nursing staff.
  • To prepare and restore the environment before and after intervention e.g. clearing the bed space area or ensuring the intervention area is appropriately set up for intervention.
  • To transport patients to and from the intervention areas as required by self or as directed by the Therapist.
  • To complete and send therapy reports for packages of care, for routine patients identified by the registered therapist.
  • To effectively use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to engage and negotiate with patients across a multicultural and intellectual spectrum.
  • To have a sound knowledge of normal physiological values e.g. blood pressure and temperature in order to be able to identify deviations from the norm and the implications for treatment.
  • To communicate the routine therapeutic needs of the patient to the MDT to ensure continuity of care.
  • To deputise for registered staff members, for communication purposes only, at board rounds.
  • To contact other agencies to discuss any changes in patient status or any technical requirements the patient may have.
  • To be able to take and make telephones calls and emails as required and take accurate messages ensuring they are followed up.
  • To order and issue loan equipment according to departmental and local guidelines.
  • To carry out basic maintenance and cleaning of equipment in line with department and Trust guidelines.

Requirements:

  • Educated to G.C.S.E level or equivalent.
  • Evidence of recent training and CPD - Willingness to follow a training programme which may involve course work.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions accurately and learn new skills quickly.
  • Effective spoken communication in English.
  • Ability to communicate information (verbal, non-verbal and written) in an accurate, clear and logical manner.
  • Ability to understand and work within the Trust’s policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to work at moderate to intense physical effort throughout the day.
  • Ability to cope working in a stressful environment and with emotional or aggressive patients and carers.
