Moorfields Eye Hospital are recruiting a highly experienced Head of Financial Planning & Projects to join their team. Moorfields is the leading provider of eye health services in the UK and a world-class centre of excellence for ophthalmic research and education. Their clinical staff take great pride in providing high-quality care to their patients across their extensive specialist clinics, including their A&E department; Paediatric clinic; Retinal Therapy Unit; Cataract, Glaucoma, Genetics, Oracular Oncology departments; and many more.

The aim of the Head of Financial Planning, Corporate Reporting & Projects is to be responsible for leading the monthly reporting process for the Trust delivering clear reports on the financial position to Trust Board, internal and external stakeholders. The post holder will also be responsible for preparing the Trust financial plan and the production of the Trust's annual budgets, understanding the underlying financial position, the development of medium- and long-term financial models and be the finance governance lead for the Trust's efficiencies programme. In addition, the role will be a central point for leading project initiatives impacting on financial reporting, management and control within the Trust.

The post holder will work closely with the Head of Financial Management and the Deputy Chief Financial Officer to provide leadership and direction to improve the financial reporting, planning and performance of the Trust. As a member of the senior finance team the post holder may frequently be asked to attend meetings and committees on behalf of the Head of Financial Management and Deputy Chief Financial Officer.

Responsibilities

  • To work closely with the Deputy Chief Finance Officer, and Head of Financial Management, finance business partners and divisional management teams in the preparation of business planning and financial budget setting process.
  • The post holder will have overall responsibility for trust wide budget setting to ensure a timely and accurate plan is submitted to Trust Board and to NHSEI.
  • Lead the completion of the annual planning regulatory reporting returns to NHS England, and local ICB information collections, to the prescribed timescales.
  • Support the Deputy Chief Financial Officer with the development of medium- and long-term financial models, underlying position and key sensitivity and scenarios modelling.
  • This complex financial information needs to be presented to Finance Committee, Management Executive financial and non-financial board members with expert knowledge of the NHS financial regime and expertise in financial management.
  • Direct the completion of the monthly finance reports to relevant forums including Finance Committee, Management Executive, and Trust Board reporting.
  • Prepare internal trust level financial reports for the Management Executive, Trust Board, Finance Committee and others as required.
  • In conjunction with finance business partners and managers, ensure financial governance of the Trust-wide efficiency programme.
  • To monitor and improve the processes for financial reporting, ensuring internal and external requirements are achieved.
  • To support and input into the production and timely completion of the year end accounting cycle.
  • Design, adapt and introduce financial information technology tools to widen the depth, completeness and quality of financial information available to stakeholders.
  • To take collective responsibility for external stakeholder management, including relevant CFOs or major financial leaders in significant finance projects.
  • To influence strategic planning and provide challenge to the divisional management team.
  • To take overall responsibility for financial planning within the overall divisional business plan and compliance with the business case process.

Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • The post holder must be a qualified member of a CCAB body (ACCA, CIPFA or CIMA) and be actively undertaking Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Experience of supporting budget holders at a senior level.
  • Experience of driving change in a large and complex environment.
  • Experience of Management Accounting.
  • Experience of producing and presenting financial results.
  • Experience of financial forecasting and budget setting.
  • Experience and expertise in leading a team of finance staff.
  • Thorough experience of financial management gained within a complex environment.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel.
  • Able to explain highly complex financial issues clearly and concisely to non-finance managers.
  • Build excellent working relationships with all Finance Business Partners, Departmental Managers and Corporate Directors.
  • Able to interpret national policy and regulations and manage the implementation of new initiatives.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving, anticipating issues before they arise, and developing solutions.
  • In depth understanding of Financial Systems and how best to develop them.
  • Highly developed technical analysis skills, with an ability to produce complex financial models.
  • Excellent verbal reasoning.
  • Advanced report writing skills.
