University College London Hospitals (UCLH) are on the lookout for a committed and qualified Band 8a Senior Clinical Pharmacist to join their highly skilled team in the pharmacy department. The UCLH Pharmacy Department provides a comprehensive range of services with the overall aim of ensuring safe, effective and economical use of medicines throughout the Trust, whilst supporting education, training and research. Pharmacy is closely involved in all stages of medicines use, from negotiating contracts for the purchase of medicines through to assessing the outcomes of medicines in the clinical setting, and across all stages in‑between. The UCLH Pharmacy has close working relationships with the local hospital pharmacy departments at The Royal Free and The Whittington Hospitals. This relationship has resulted in centralisation of some key backroom operational services such as manufacturing, repacking and education and training, whilst focussing local clinical services directly towards improving patient care.
Job Purpose
- Lead on the provision of clinical pharmacy services to T8 (eighth floor of UCH Tower), which accommodates inpatient beds for patients with, or at high risk of acquiring, acute infections and tropical diseases.
- Support the provision of a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to the Mortimer Market Centre – a service provided by UCLH on behalf of Central and North West London (CNWL) NHS Foundation Trust – which accommodates outpatient HIV, GUM, sexual health and tropical disease clinics. This includes supporting the provision of extended dispensary sessions until 19:30 on one evening per week.
- Act as an expert resource on the safe and effective use of medicines for the management of HIV, GUM, infectious and tropical disease.
- Prescribe medication within your agreed scope of practice in response to patient need and in consultation with the broader clinical team.
- Support the safe and effective provision of medicines via homecare for HIV patients, including the timely clinical screening of prescriptions.
- Support clinical governance processes, such as incident reporting and investigation, complaint handling, development of guidelines, policies and procedures, and the monitoring and evaluation of services.
- Provide assurance to UCLH and CNWL on the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines in respective areas.
- Support the provision of relevant evaluated financial data on medicines expenditure, income, and cost saving or avoidance initiatives.
- Support the set-up, implementation and monitoring of relevant clinical trials.
- Act as a role model to junior staff, and support their learning and development.
- Support the education of pharmacy and other multidisciplinary staff groups on relevant medicines‑related matters.
Requirements
- Masters of Pharmacy degree or equivalent
- Current full registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
- Minimum three years of experience as a dedicated clinical pharmacist practitioner
- Substantial post‑registration experience
- Six years post‑registration with the GPhC (previously RPSGB)
- Clinical experience of general medicine and infection (including HIV, GUM as a non‑specialist practitioner)
- Postgraduate Diploma or MSc in General or Clinical Pharmacy Practice
- Identifies areas where non‑doctor prescribing may be applicable to specialist practice
- Meets expected levels of practice as defined by others
- Maintains a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice
