University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) are searching for an experienced Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse to join their highly passionate Neuro Critical Care team. UCLH is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK, serving a large and diverse population. We provide academically led acute and specialist services, to people from the local area, from throughout the United Kingdom and overseas.

The Unit Neuroscience Critical Care: Neuro Critical Care is a 28 bedded area on two floors which incorporates 14 level 3 ITU beds, 12 level 2 HDU beds and 2 PACU beds. The area provides care for critically ill and high dependency patients with complex neuromedical conditions or following emergency and elective neuro/spinal surgery and thrombectomy/neuro radiological procedures. Most patients require ventilation and specialist/invasive monitoring and haemofiltration/Plasma exchange. The unit is run by Consultant Intensivists supported by specialist neurosurgical and neurology consultants, along with therapists to provide holistic care for patients in this complex and interesting speciality.

The post holder is responsible for the provision and delivery of care to patients on Neuro Critical Care. You will look after a broad range of neurosurgical and neuro medical conditions. Staff work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, liaising with medical, anaesthetic staff and therapies to provide high quality holistic care to patients.

Responsibilities

  • To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care.
  • To manage the delivery of care based on current evidence and assist in promoting nursing practice in line with relevant research and evidence-based practice.
  • To promote a patient focused multidisciplinary approach to care in collaboration with carers, health care professionals and other agencies.
  • To complete patient documentation correctly, appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • To maintain a safe ward environment and work with other members of the team to produce health care environments that are conducive to safe, therapeutic, and ethical practice.
  • To develop the skills to take charge of a clinical area on a regular basis with the support and direction of senior staff.
  • To supervise junior staff in the delivery of care.
  • To support the delivery of care when levelling of staff is necessary to ensure safe staffing levels across the hospital and trust wide.
  • To support and direct junior staff and health care assistants in the area of work.
  • To participate in ward rounds, multi-disciplinary meetings, and departmental meetings to their needs.
  • Participate in the promotion and maintenance of effective communication with the patient and their carer(s).
  • Provide information which enables patients to make choices about adopting a healthier lifestyle.
  • Complete electronic patient documentation via EHRS (EPIC) correctly and appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Develop communication skills to convey complex and sensitive information effectively to patients, carers, and other staff, overcoming any barriers to understanding and providing support during distressing or emotional events. This includes expanded role responsibilities, following appropriate training.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships with patients and colleagues.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse Degree in health-related subject
  • Specialist course/pathway (60 credits at Level 3) or Equivalent
  • NMC recognised mentorship qualification (Mentoring and Enabling Learning in the Practice Setting, ENB 998 or equivalent)
  • Able to coordinate in absence of senior staff
  • Experience in looking after acutely unwell patients
  • Experience in working as part of a team
  • Demonstrates awareness of research/evidence based practice
  • Able to take charge and delegate duties
  • Able to prioritise care for a group of patients and provide a plan of care
