Band 6 - Radiographer - UCLH

The Department

The Radiology Department at UCH is situated on the lower ground floor for Ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MR and Fluoroscopy, the ground floor for Accident & Emergency and Second floor for MRI, CT, Interventional Radiology, Endoscopy and Vascular Access.

Post holders will rotate throughout the department and across satellite sites at Macmillan Cancer Centre, Grafton Way Building, and Westmoreland Street Hospital, all within walking distance.

The post holder will liaise with other radiographers, ward staff, radiologists, support staff, administration staff, engineers' visitors and staff from other departments.

The Role

The post holder will be responsible for performing a comprehensive range of diagnostic radiographic procedures to a consistently high professional standard.

The role requires the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred imaging services, ensuring high-quality diagnostic outcomes while maintaining compliance with professional, departmental, and regulatory standards.

The post holder is required to

• Perform a wide range of radiographic procedures to the required professional and technical standards, ensuring high-quality diagnostic imaging and patient care.
• Prioritise patients effectively to maintain optimum efficiency, patient flow, and overall service quality.
• Accurately record and input all relevant patient and examination data to maintain data integrity and support clinical governance and service reporting requirements.
• Support radiographic assistants and student radiographers in both service delivery and their ongoing professional development.
• Provide professional advice and support to colleagues, medical staff, nursing teams, and other multidisciplinary staff groups.
• Maintain and enhance professional practice, and that of the Directorate, through active participation in Continuous Professional Development (CPD), training, and service improvement initiatives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Assess a referral or request form and justify it under IR(ME)R 2017 and locally agreed protocols.
• Prioritise patients to ensure optimum efficiency and service quality.
• Ensure that the protocol used for an examination is suitably matched to the clinical indications for the procedure.
• Liaise with referring clinicians to clarify or discuss requests for complex radiographic procedures.
• Act as a point of advice for referrers, other clinical staff, patients, and their relatives.
• Ensure that patients, relatives, and staff are appropriately informed and reassured of any discussions relating to patient procedures.
• Assess the physical, mental and communication abilities and needs of individual patients and respond appropriately.
• Answer all questions and concerns of the patients, providing them with appropriate responses, putting the patient’s condition into the context of the diagnostic procedure.
• Document that patients have consented to procedures and to issue and ensure they understand any instructions they need to follow.
• Enter accurate patient examination data into Imaging Information Systems i. e. EHRS and PACS.
• Accurately position patients for the appropriate examinations, considering their abilities, needs and limitations.
• Appropriately adapt standard techniques to ensure that radiographic procedures are undertaken appropriately for patients with limited capabilities.
• Undertake radiological procedures (i. e. multi-faceted, multiple trauma), utilising skills, knowledge, and experience, setting exposure parameters.
• Participate in patient monitoring or administration of oxygen.
• Visually be able to discriminate subtle differences between images to ensure there are no artefacts.
• Assess outcomes following procedures and ensure that any necessary additional procedures are undertaken within a single patient attendance where possible.
• Assess and respond to adverse treatment responses.
• Ensure that unexpected abnormalities seen are brought to the attention of the medical staff of the department, and the referring clinician, and that the patient is managed in an appropriate and supportive manner.
• Work unsupervised, seeking advice from colleagues and senior radiographic or medical staff when required.

Requirements

• BSc or Diploma in Radiography
• State Registration
• Evidence of relevant continuing professional development
• Evidence that knowledge of general radiographic techniques is up to date
• Range of radiographic experience gained as a student or in first post
• Demonstrate awareness of advocacy for patients
• Evidence of ability to assess the needs of the patient
• Demonstrates professional approach, in demeanour, appearance and time keeping
• Ability to critically analyse Radiographs
• Ability to use own initiative
• Ability to wear radiation protective clothing at 0.35Pb equivalent for periods of up to 4 hours
• Ability to safely use a wide range of manual handling equipment as provided by the Trust
• Good Understanding of Legislation relating to Health & Safety and Radiation Protection.
• Evidence of understanding or participation in QA Programme
• Evidence of participation in teamwork, both uni- and multi- professional
