Band 6 - Oncology Outpatient Physiotherapist - Barts

Job Purpose

An exciting opportunity to work at the UK’s oldest hospital and a Centre of Excellence for cancer care. Working in an integrated therapy team as a Senior Physiotherapist, the post holder will be expected to:

• Participate in the delivery of the specialist physiotherapy service to cancer patients at St Bartholomew’s.
• Demonstrate the role and importance of physiotherapy in cancer care through the use of evidence based practice and standardised assessments.
• Participate in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the specialty and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of the practitioner’s professional activities.
• To undertake the specialist assessment as an autonomous practitioner for patients with multifaceted rehabilitation / respiratory/ fatigue/ axillary web syndrome/lower urinary tract symptoms/functional/falls problems of patients with a primary diagnosis of cancer.
• To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive discharge plans.
• To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co‑ordination and palpatory sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
• To formulate, evaluate and reassess individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options in order to formulate a specialised programme of care.
• To be responsible for own and team patient care plans.
• To provide advice on specialised oncology physiotherapy care and treatment for patients with cancer and treatment related problems based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience, and to be consulted frequently for specialist advice and guidance by members and other health care professionals both within and outside the trust.
• To lead, implement and manage outpatient classes within cancer services, providing group assessments and interventions, such as cancer exercise, fatigue management, breathlessness and health and wellbeing events.
• To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance, clinical risk and to demonstrate the use of treatment plans with an evidence‑based link.
• To be responsible for maintenance of accurate written records using SOAP system and the use of the computerised patient data system, and supervision of team record keeping; to include comprehensive progress and discharge reports.
• To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions, including manual physiotherapy techniques and therapeutic handling.
• To ensure that a high standard of clinical practice and patient care is maintained and to ensure that other physiotherapists in the team do likewise, through ongoing competency assessment and evaluation of treatment outcomes.
• To keep up to date with clinical developments, analysing current research and discussing and implementing changes in clinical practice accordingly.
• To be informed of and work to the standards in the specialty area, and ensure that Band 5 and 6 members of the team are informed and work to these standards.
• To use specialist knowledge to refer to other health disciplines as appropriate.
• To be highly competent in assessing a wide range of conditions experienced by patients with cancer based on advanced theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, often in situations where conflicting evidence is present.

Requirements

• Degree in Physiotherapy.
• HCPC registration.
• A broad variety of post graduate experience including some cancer, respiratory, neuro‑sciences and musculoskeletal.
• Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy team and/or multi‑disciplinary team.
• Experience of working with people with life‑limiting disease.
• Experience post qualification working in a clinical setting.
• Experience of working within the NHS.
• Understanding of clinical governance and its implications for the service.
• Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust’s policies of Data Protection, Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety and meet the differing needs of the patients.
• Remain updated with professional practice and new research/evidence.
