Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) are searching for an experienced and passionate band 5 Registered Mental Health Nurse to join their highly skilled team. GOSH is an international centre of excellence in child healthcare, dedicated to providing world-class care to children and young people with rare, complex and difficult-to-treat conditions.

The Mildred Creak Unit at Great Ormond Street is an in-patient psychiatric unit for seven to fourteen year olds. We have seven inpatient beds available on the unit as well as three day patient spaces and we accept children with a range of behavioural and emotional difficulties. The role involves working as a member of the nursing team to provide care to the young people, facilitating their daily routines and attendance of the therapeutic timetable in a nurturing and supportive manner.

The role includes various duties such as:

  • Supporting young people to eat
  • Helping young people with their physiotherapy programmes
  • Providing a space for young people to talk about their feelings
  • Clinical tasks such as administration of medication, nasogastric feeding, physical observations and the facilitation of therapeutic groups
  • Aspects of housekeeping and admin

Responsibilities:

  • To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, providing a high standard of holistic family centred care to the children, young people and families.
  • Ability to promote family centered care and establish good relationships with children, young people and their families.
  • To communicate effectively at all levels within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be able to take charge of the ward in the absence of senior nursing staff following achievement of required competence.
  • To actively engage with young people and families, in order to facilitate recovery from their individual difficulties.
  • To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion in Practice.

Qualifications:

  • NMC Registered Nurse Child, Mental Health or Learning Disability
  • Relevant nursing qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development linked to demonstrable competencies
  • Experience of having worked with children/young people with mental health difficulties
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in CAMHS
  • Understanding of the importance of research and evidence-based practice
  • Basic knowledge of computer skills
  • Understanding of safeguarding issues according to Trust policies and procedures
  • Understanding or evidence of fulfilling requirements for Revalidation
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance (e.g. risk management, audit, quality)
  • Experience of working as part of a diverse team
  • Experience of contributing to an inclusive workplace culture
  • Understanding of nursing practice and innovation outside of GOSH
  • Knowledge of clinical incidents and complaints and reporting
