Whittington Health NHS Trust are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 5 or 6 Adult Audiologist to join their highly skilled team. Whittington Health NHS Trust provides a wide range of health and care services, supporting patients, families and local communities in community health centres, GP clinics, dental practices across North Central London and beyond, at our hospital in Archway, and in patients’ own homes.
Job Summary: To perform routine audiological assessments on adults without direct supervision as part of a multi-disciplinary team. To select and fit hearing aids to routine adult clients referred from General Practitioners, and internally via ENT/ Consultant Audiological Physician as directed. To assist senior Audiological staff/medical staff with non-routine diagnostic and rehabilitative cases for both adults and children.
Main Duties:
- To be responsible for performing routine Audiological test battery as part of doctor-led clinics on adults. This will include Pure tone audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, Oto-acoustic emissions.
- To assess direct referral patients using BAA national guidelines, including taking an appropriate history and seeking advice/making appropriate referrals for medical opinion based on findings.
- To ensure that assessments follow BSA Recommended procedures.
- To assess patients from ENT clinics and liaise with ENT Consultants to provide a holistic approach to the patient.
- To select, program and evaluate/verify hearing aids for Adults seen as part of Direct referral clinics, or referrals from Doctor’s clinics.
- To ensure that processes follow MHAS (Modernisation of hearing aids) protocols, and to make modifications to settings/fittings based on client need/feedback.
- To complete validated outcome measures to obtain a qualitative assessment of hearing disability and handicap using Glasgow Hearing Benefit Profile and Glasgow Hearing aid Difference profile.
- To conduct hearing aid reviews for Adult hearing aid users.
- To liaise with other agencies/professionals in the management of patients where appropriate and refer to other agencies as required.
- To provide appropriate basic advice on rehabilitation and self-management.
- To undertake routine maintenance and repair of hearing aids, and to take impressions for ear moulds for Adults and to modify and fit ear moulds.
- To undertake hearing tests of Adults referred by the medical team, as part of aetiological investigations.
- If necessary and at the request of the clinical lead/ENT and with appropriate training; to perform tympanometry and undertake hearing assessments of older children in ENT clinic.
- To be accountable for the day to day management of pertinent work areas, ensuring that equipment is maintained correctly, and calibration is carried out.
- To ensure daily and weekly calibration of audiometric equipment, and report any faults to senior staff.
- To act on/follow up any faults as directed by senior staff.
- To be responsible for the daily preparation and end of day clearing up of clinical areas used by Doctors and clinicians in line with the infection control policy.
- To liaise with Medical, Technical and Scientific staff in the identification, development and implementation of new clinical tests and procedures.
- To alert relevant member of the team regarding low stock.
- To ensure that departmental/national recommended procedures/protocols/guidelines are adhered to and a high level of competence is maintained.
- To undertake home visits to housebound patients to provide a full range of audiological services where access to patients in a domestic setting may be restricted, as and when directed by line manager/service lead.
- To undertake visits to in-patients who have been identified by ward staff as having hearing problems, providing the appropriate audiological services at the bedside, as and when directed to by line manager/service lead.
- To perform evening and weekend clinics as required.
- To rotate at other community/hospital sites as required, as directed by line manager/service lead, and/or due to service requirements.
Requirements:
- HCPC registered
- A science-based degree (BSc/MSc)
- Relevant A-levels (Biology, Physics, Maths)
- Strong communication/counseling skills
- Strong scientific understanding (physics, biology, acoustics)
- Attention to detail, problem-solving, and clinical reasoning
- Empathy, sensitivity, and customer service skills
