St Bartholomew's Hospital (Barts) are searching for an experienced and passionate Band 3 Imaging Assistant to join their highly skilled team. Our group of hospitals provide a huge range of clinical services to people in east London and beyond. We operate from four major hospital sites (The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham) and a number of community locations, including Mile End hospital. Around 2.5 million people living in east London look to our services to provide them with the healthcare they need. Please note that the working hours for this post are flexible: 08:00-18:00 / 08:30-17:00hrs.

As a member of our busy and dynamic department your central role would be to provide the highest quality care for patients referred to our service. You would do this by assisting the Sonographers and Radiologists with the provision of a wide range of ultrasound examinations, including: General Abdominal, Gynaecological, Head and Neck, Musculoskeletal, Vascular and Neonatal Hip ultrasound examinations. You may also assist with medical procedures such as biopsies and musculoskeletal steroid injections. Your main duties would be to assist with the organization and care on the inpatient ultrasound service. In addition you would provide clerical and reception support. You would be based in the General Ultrasound Department.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delivering the highest level of patient care
  • Co-ordinating and prioritising work practice within a designated area
  • Managing the throughput of imaging lists in an efficient and timely manner
  • Where necessary organizing porters to bring patients to the department
  • Making sure the working environment is clean and hygienic
  • Cleaning and sterilization of equipment
  • Checking equipment and reporting faults
  • Preparing patients for ultrasound examinations, including safe manual handling of patients in chairs and beds/trolleys
  • Communicating with patients and their carers, explaining the procedure about to be undertaken in a form that is appropriate to them and the situation
  • Ensuring effective communication with all staff, patients and relatives, maintaining confidentiality at all times
  • Acting as a chaperone during intimate examinations
  • Assisting in medical procedures such as biopsies, involving aseptic techniques
  • Laying out trolleys prior to procedures
  • Dressing wounds following biopsies
  • Preparation of slides and specimens and transporting them to Pathology
  • Accurately inputting data and logging procedures using departmental IT systems
  • Assisting with stock control and ordering of stock
  • Assisting in routine Imaging duties such as handling calls and messages
  • Administrative tasks
  • Maintenance of accurate and concise records
  • Working effectively on the Reception Desk – greeting patients, making appointments, fielding queries etc.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a healthcare environment
  • Experience of dealing with stressful and emotionally charged situations
  • High level inter-personal and communications skills
  • Ability to work within set timeframes working to priorities and deadlines
  • Able to communicate and work collaboratively with other disciplines
  • Organised and efficient in their work
  • Flexible in their working pattern
  • Ability to deal with conflict and stressful situations
  • Ability to deal with patients in an empathic and considerate fashion
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Computer literate
  • High level of work organisation, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement
  • To be able to work as part of a team & prioritise busy work schedule
  • To set up clinical trolleys using aseptic techniques
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, including inputting information into a PC
  • Ability to act on instructions when given by sonographer/lead sonographer
