The Finance & Performance Directorate plays a critical role in protecting the Bank’s financial position and reputation. The overall purpose of the Directorate is to contribute to the successful execution of the Bank\’s aims and objectives by ensuring it has an appropriate financial platform for its broader responsibilities, and for the challenges facing an organisation of more than 5,000 staff, with annual expenditure of circa £700mn.

The Finance & Performance Directorate has four main Divisions, Financial Reporting & Control, Financial Analytics & Insight, the Corporate Investment Portfolio Office and Finance Strategy.

Job Description

This role is an exciting opportunity to join a modern dynamic tax team working at the Bank of England.

A day in the role

Due to the varied nature of the role, there is no such thing as a typical day.

You will be working on VAT Compliance and advisory and providing Tax advisory support to front or back-office functions in the bank.

You will also help to mentor junior colleagues in the team.

Role Requirements

Responsibilities of the role:

Core

  • Preparation and review of the Partial Exemption Special Method and VAT returns
  • Provide tax advisory support to the business
  • Liaising with HMRC on issues as they arise and timely response to queries.

Additional With Experience

  • Support the Tax team in providing corporate tax support to group companies: Help, prepare UK corporate tax computations and file returns. In addition, assist with producing tax disclosures for inclusion in their statutory accounts and dealing with tax technical issues as they arise. Help to resolve tax queries from our external auditors, EY.
  • Support the review of the Corporation Tax return.
  • Support the Bank’s submissions under the US Qualified Intermediary Programme.

Minimum Criteria

  • Chartered Accountant or Chartered Tax Advisor Qualification (UK Qualified)
  • Experience of UK banking tax, ideally with exposure to banking VAT
  • Good numerate and a proficient user of Microsoft Excel

How This Role Fits Into The Wider Bank

This role plays a critical function in the Bank by creating the tax numbers in the annual accounts for the Bank of England and also provides tax advisory to the business functions in the Bank.

Salary And Benefits Information

We encourage flexible working, part time working and job share arrangements. Part time salary and benefits will be on a pro-rated basis as appropriate.

The role for this salary is Competitive.

In addition, we also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:

  • A non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/50th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year.
  • A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
  • A 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits.
  • 26 days’ annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.
  • Private medical insurance and income protection.

National Security Vetting Process

Employment in this role will be subject to the National Security Vetting clearance process (and typically can take between 6 to 12 weeks post offer) and the passing of additional Bank security checks in accordance with the Bank policy. Further information regarding the vetting and security clearance requirements for the role will be provided to the successful applicant, and information about how the Bank processes personal data for these purposes, is set out in the Bank\’s Privacy Notice .
