We're looking for a senior strategic and people-focused leader to shape the future of Hosting at the Bank of England. As our new Hosting Technical Service Owner, you'll lead a large, unified team responsible for both on-premise and cloud services. You'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the performance, reliability, and evolution of the Bank of England's most critical technology platforms, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture. This is a Head of Division (HoD) level role, reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer.
You'll lead the development and execution of a unified Hosting Strategy that brings together the Bank of England's on-premise, cloud, and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) platforms into a cohesive, modern ecosystem. A key focus will be delivering a centralised, consistent, and simplified vending model that enables teams across the organisation to access hosting services efficiently and securely. This includes driving improvements in service catalogue design, automation, and self-service capabilities.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a transformation that not only modernises our hosting landscape but also underpins all of the Bank's most critical platforms and services. Your leadership will ensure these essential services are resilient, performant, and future ready.
You'll also play a key role in enabling the Bank's adoption of cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, large language models, and robotics. In this context, robotics refers to the automation of infrastructure and operational processes - such as provisioning, patching, monitoring, and scaling - to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and accelerate delivery. Your work will ensure that our hosting capabilities are robust and adaptable enough to support the next generation of digital services.
Location: Leeds or London based (hybrid working model)
Role Requirements
Perhaps you've led large-scale hosting teams or driven cloud and AI adoption programmes. Or maybe you're passionate about building inclusive, high-performing teams and want to shape the future of Hosting at the Bank of England. If you're excited by the opportunity to lead a critical function and make a lasting impact, we'd love to hear from you.
We're looking for someone who has the following key skills and experience:
- A minimum of 10 years' experience in IT hosting or infrastructure services, including leading teams responsible for both on-premise and cloud environments
- A minimum of 5 years' experience working with public cloud platforms (e.g. Azure, AWS, GCP)
- Proven experience in migrating on-premise services to cloud
- Experience managing third-party vendors and defining supplier strategies
- Demonstrated ability to lead managers and large teams through change
We are interested in hearing from candidates who have the following capabilities:
- Ability to define and deliver a unified Hosting Strategy aligned to organisational goals
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience influencing senior leaders and translating business needs into technical strategies
- A collaborative leadership style, with a focus on empowering teams and fostering continuous improvement
- Up-to-date knowledge of industry trends in cloud services, including cloud-native principles, containers, microservices, and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with next-generation storage solutions and software-defined networking technologies
- Experience embedding agile delivery methodologies and DevOps practices across hosting teams
- Proficiency in scripting and automation using tools such as Python, PowerShell, or Terraform
- Awareness of AI and machine learning infrastructure requirements, including support for large language models and robotics platforms
- A commitment to inclusive leadership and creating a culture where everyone can thrive
It would also be beneficial, but not necessary, to have some of the following:
- Experience working in financial services or regulated environments
- Familiarity with product and platform-based operating models
- Relevant certifications (e.g. Azure/AWS/GCP, ITIL, TOGAF)
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and cloud governance frameworks
- A track record of leading large-scale transformation programmes
Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't meet every single criterion. We value diverse perspectives and believe that different backgrounds contribute to our team's success.
Please note: due to the critical nature of our services, there may be occasions where evening or weekend work is required. This is accounted for in the base salary.
