Overview
Banking Operatives, Leeds Banking and Payments Operations Centre – join to apply for the Banking Operatives role at Bank of England. The Bank of England is the UK\’s central bank, responsible for monetary and financial stability.
Opportunities available in Leeds across multiple teams within the Financial Operations Centre. We are expanding our footprint in Leeds and are recruiting for several roles across Sterling Payments Operations, Collateral Management and Custody, and RTGS Operations (BAPT).
This is a pooled recruitment process with a single application considered for the three teams, matched based on interests, experience and skills. The closing date for applications is 5 October 2025. Candidates will join as a cohort in early 2026 (likely February 2026).

- Your role within the Sterling Payments Operations Team
- Processing Payments: handle large money transfers quickly and securely, following regulations.
- Working with HM Treasury: assist with government money matters and provide updates.
- Fixing Payment Issues: resolve problems with payment instructions to maintain smooth operations.
- Building Relationships: collaborate with colleagues and external partners.
- Testing Systems: regularly test systems to ensure reliability, including in emergencies.

- Your role within the Collateral Management and Custody Team
- Daily Monitoring and Settlement of Transactions: oversee and settle securities, fixed-income, repo and derivatives.
- Asset Servicing and Custody Management: safeguard client assets and manage asset servicing.
- Issue Resolution and Query Management: address operational issues and respond to queries.
- Support for Business Change Initiatives: assist in testing and implementing projects.
- Process Improvement and Implementation: identify and drive process improvements.

- Your role within the RTGS Operations – Business Acceptance and Participant Testing Team (BAPT)
- Test planning: determine what needs to be tested and create test plans.
- System testing: ensure systems work for users.

- User training and support: provide training and help users understand systems.

Job requirements
Minimum criteria (for all roles/teams)
- Strong workload management with the ability to identify, prioritise and manage deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously.
- Good attitude and problem-solving capabilities.
- IT literacy with confidence in Excel and other Microsoft products.
- A genuine interest in the Bank\’s operations and curiosity about how things work.
Desirable experience
- Securities settlements
- Knowledge of CREST, Easyway, Xact, T24 and SWIFT
- Experience in Collateral management
- Experience in CHAPS / BACS payment processes
- Knowledge and experience of testing principles and tooling/application
- Experience in User Acceptance Testing
We encourage candidates who meet the minimum criteria to apply, even without prior financial services experience. Successful candidates will join at a Foundation level. Where roles are eligible for the Banking Pay framework, we will consider offering an experienced level entry if you have relevant experience.
Working pattern and location
- Work Location: Leeds office about 2.5 days a week on average; training may require more frequent presence in the first six months. Some training in London with travel and accommodation costs covered.
- Shift hours: Some roles include early starts (8am) or late finishes (up to 8pm) on a rotating basis; additional pay for unsocial hours. If these hours are not possible, you can indicate this in your application.
- Weekend work: Occasional weekend work may be required during system changes.
Salary and benefits
- Pay and allowances: pay for unsocial hours varies by role; details in the provided table.
- Progression: move from Foundation to Experienced level in approximately 18–24 months in Sterling Payments Operations and Collateral Management and Custody teams.
- Operational allowance: £4,000 per year (adjusted for part-time) for unsocial hours; paid monthly and added to base salary; does not affect pension or benefits.
Candidates with prior relevant experience will be considered for an experienced role. Salary and additional allowances will be confirmed at offer, aligned with the salary table.
