Overview

The School of Health Sciences is seeking a passionate and forward‑thinking educator to join our pioneering dental education team. This is a full‑time permanent role and offers opportunities to shape the future of dental hygiene and therapy education in Wales.

Purpose of the Job

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including supervision of projects.
  • Develop teaching materials, modules, and course design.
  • Provide pastoral and academic support to students.
  • Lead national standards and academic scholarship (Senior Lecturer level).
  • Facilitate the development of new dental programmes.
  • Perform School and College leadership duties as directed by the Head of School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Working with the Head of School, the post‑holder will:

Teaching Duties

  • Support innovative course design, learning, teaching, and assessment practice.
  • Support student experiential placements and liaise with Health Education and Improvement Wales.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lectures and tutorials across diverse class sizes.
  • Develop and deliver simulation activities relevant to dental teaching.
  • Contribute to teaching across other programmes (BSc, Masters, PhD, CPD).
  • Participate in academic quality assurance and curriculum review processes.
  • Champion learning and teaching innovation in VLE and other technologies.

Senior Lecturer Teaching Responsibilities

  • Lead curriculum development and delivery.
  • Develop inter‑professional teaching collaborations.
  • Publish research results as lead author in high‑quality journals and book chapters.
  • Manage research projects and groups with national excellence outcomes.

Administrative Duties and Wider Contributions

  • Contribute to School management and academic governance.
  • Address student experience, recruitment, and retention.
  • Promote equality, diversity, and the Athena SWAN agenda.
  • Enhance the University’s external profile through marketing initiatives.
  • Mentor less experienced staff members.
  • Undertake duties directed by the Head of School.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in performance review and developmental activities.
  • Comply with equality policies, Dignity at Work, Study Policy, and the Welsh Language Scheme.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy working environment for all.
  • Observe relevant legal and financial policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training

Essential (Grades 8 & 9)

  • Registered dental hygienist or therapist with the GDC.
  • Postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area (or near completion).
  • Minimum 3 years substantial teaching experience; HEA Fellowship within 3 years or a PgCert in Higher Education.
  • PgCert for Teaching in Higher Education or HEA Fellowship recognition, or eligibility to apply.

Desirable (Grades 8 & 9)

  • PhD level education or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

Experience / Knowledge

Essential (Grades 8 & 9)

  • Professional UK dental hygienist or therapist experience.
  • Module development and delivery experience in higher education.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
  • Effective teaching evidence with demonstrable impact on student learning outcomes (Grade 9 required).
  • Leadership of quality courses and departmental initiatives.
  • Academic quality assurance assessment participation (Grade 9 required).

Desirable (Grades 8 & 9)

  • Design, development, and delivery of innovative undergraduate curricula aligned to GDC Standards.
  • Academic quality assurance assessment participation.

Skills / Abilities

Essential (Grades 8 & 9)

  • Excellent verbal and written skills; demonstrable IT skills (VLE and other learning technologies).
  • Effective teamwork and independent initiative.
  • Strong organisational skills and prioritisation.

Other (Grades 8 & 9)

Essential: Clear communication in English to diverse audiences.

Desirable: Appreciation of bilingual health and care delivery across North Wales; Welsh language communication is desirable.
