The successful candidate will employ a range of standard techniques (Western blotting, immunocytochemistry) in combination with more advanced technologies including generation of knock-out cancer cell lines via CRISPR-Cas9 methodology. The student will also be trained in iPOND to enable the detection of nascent DNA-associated proteins, and DNA fibre assays to track DNA replication dynamics at the single-molecule level. Through collaborations with leading experts from different fields (Prof. Jos Jonkers, Netherlands Cancer Institute and Dr Leonie Unterholzner, Lancaster University), this project brings an innovative perspective to the study of replication stress and DNA damage-associated innate immune activation.
Undertaking this project will allow the student to develop their research skills in a friendly and collaborative environment, while gaining expertise in the field of DNA repair, replication stress and inflammatory signalling., * References: All applications require two academic references to be submitted in support. Candidates must approach referees themselves and include the references with their application.
-
Curriculum Vitae: This should be no longer than two pages. Where appropriate, this should also include proof of English Language Competency (7.0 IELTS minimum).
-
Research Proposal: 3-4 pages including a clear description of the research questions, hypotheses, the approach to collecting and analysing data, and a proposed timeline for all elements of the research and writing up.
An undergraduate degree in a related discipline is essential, and a master’s level qualification in a related field is desirable. Candidates will need to demonstrate a strong interest in research. We are looking for a motivated, meticulous, and scientifically curious student that can independently plan and perform experiments, and ensure that the results are recorded, analysed and written up in a timely fashion. We value creativity, strong problem-solving abilities, and resourcefulness. We welcome applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Essential Experience
Basic molecular biology techniques are essential. Good presentation and scientific writing skills are also essential.
The project is funded by Cancer Research Wales for 3 years (full-time) to commence as soon as possible but by no later than April 1st, 2025. Funding includes a £19,000 per annum tax-free stipend.
