Applications are invited for a full‑time Thermal‑Hydraulics Senior Laboratory Technician in the Nuclear Futures Institute (NFI) at Bangor University. The position is partially sponsored by the United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL).

The Senior Laboratory Technician will work alongside the Chief Technician and the Thermal‑Hydraulics laboratory team to support research activities, maintain laboratory facilities, provide technical assistance to academics, students and UKNNL staff, and contribute to training and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Technician with the maintenance, safety, security and operation of thermal‑hydraulics facilities.
  • Provide expertise in relevant equipment and instrumentation.
  • Participate in the design and installation of new experimental equipment.
  • Carry out basic scientific measurements and experimental set‑ups.
  • Calibrate instruments, prepare standard specimens and support manufacturing of experimental components.
  • Train and support facility users, including visiting researchers from UKNNL.
  • Schedule maintenance and manage consumable supplies.
  • Ensure safe working conditions and comply with health and safety policies.
  • Engage with UKNNL technical staff to share knowledge and support joint projects.
  • Attend laboratory management meetings and performance review activities.
  • Support training and development of technical staff.
  • Maintain documentation such as protocols databases, risk assessments and standard operating procedures.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: 2 AS Levels or 1 A Level or NVQ Level 4 in a relevant subject; or Level 5 IVQ Advanced Technician Diploma.
  • Desirable: Undergraduate degree in engineering, physical sciences or related field; relevant technical or laboratory safety qualification; valid Mobile Vertical (3A) licence.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Essential: Knowledge of process control equipment, sensing devices, rotating equipment, high‑temperature or high‑pressure systems; laboratory or process plant experience; ability to write SOPs and risk assessments; calibration and problem‑solving skills.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of thermo‑fluid dynamics; experience in a process facility; proficiency with LabVIEW; COSHH assessment preparation.

Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication with scientists and engineers.
  • Strong safety awareness and ability to enforce safety standards.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines.
  • Physical fitness to climb ladders, move items up to 25 kg and use mechanical tools.
  • Basic understanding of bilingual (Welsh/English) environment is valued; Welsh language skills are desirable.
  • Project management and teamwork skills (desirable).
