Building a sustainable tomorrow BAM UK & Ireland is recruiting a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer. Reporting to the Temporary Works CoE Lead UK&I, you will be providing or supervising others. Providing safe, practical and economical designs and technical support for internal clients to a high standard of professional competence and in compliance with Company procedures. The role will involve a mixture of working from any UK office location and from home.

Making Possible

  • Representing the Temporary Works CoE as required at internal and external meetings.
  • Liaising with other departments and project/bid teams within the Division with respect to design requirements.
  • Assisting with Performance and Development reviews and feedback for other staff and identifying appropriate development activities.
  • Being the “key point of contact” when appointed as Lead Designer (or equivalent) on specific projects/bids.
  • Arranging and undertaking site visits and Assurance Audits when appropriate.
  • Supervising others working on tasks within informal teams, whilst maintaining responsibility for the team's overall performance.
  • Ensuring that design work undertaken is carried out in accordance with Divisional/Segment procedures and that a high level of professionalism is maintained.
  • Ensuring that all chargeable work is identified and charges can be recovered through the accurate recording and timely submission of timesheets/allocations by yourself and others working under your supervision.
  • Ensuring that feedback on design work is collated and saved in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Preparing/supervising the development of conceptual designs with a view to ensuring safe, practical and economic designs in accordance with current standards.
  • Preparing/supervising the development of detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes including calculations, design risk assessments and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of 3D models and working drawings.
  • Checking/reviewing the design work of other staff members and external designers in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Summarising quantities relating to design tasks and prepare for pricing purposes when required.
  • Ensuring that the design task database is maintained with up to date and relevant data for all tasks assigned to you, or under your supervision.
  • Taking a proactive approach to training and continuing professional development of yourself and others.
  • Identifying opportunities and implementing improvements to departmental processes.
  • Developing and delivering graduate tutorials and other training as required.
  • Coaching and mentoring other staff members.
  • Carrying out other relevant duties as required from time to time.

Reporting to the Temporary Works CoE Lead UK&I. This role is hybrid and can be based between any UK Office location and home.

What do you bring to the role?

The following are mandatory requirements:

  • Demonstratable experience in civil engineering design for structures commonly required by BAM UK&I, which may include earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, façade retention, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork/falsework.
  • Proven experience and expertise in the use of a range of civil/structural engineering design/analysis software and draughting/modelling packages.
  • Demonstratable experience in construction methods and processes.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
  • Demonstratable experience of digital construction processes.
  • Demonstratable application of commercial management.
  • Chartered membership of ICE and/or IStructE or an accepted alternative professional institution or demonstrable experience and responsibility at a level at least equivalent to a Chartered Engineer.
  • Experience within a design team.

The following are desirable requirements:

  • Construction site/project experience.
  • Experience of modern methods of construction (e.g. DfMA etc.).
  • Experience in training and coaching.
