The predicted salary is between 55000 - 65000 Β£ per year.

The Ferrovial BAM Joint Venture has a successful history of delivering critical infrastructure for the UK on time and to budget together in joint venture partnership. They first worked together in 2010 as BFK, delivering three Crossrail contracts, including the longest stretch of tunnelling works between Royal Oak and Farringdon Station, the first central station to be completed on the Elizabeth Line. The team is also delivering the Silvertown Tunnel project together in East London and has been delivering excellence at each stage of HS2, such as Fusion JV for the Enabling Works packages, EKFB for the central Main Works Contract and now delivering the track infrastructure across the entire HS2 route.

We are now recruiting for a Rail Systems Lead Design Manager to join the HS2 Track infrastructure project at the initial design phase which will run concurrently with the completion of main works contracts, which are now at their peak. The team operate under a collaborative Rail Systems Alliance structure, designed to manage interfaces and resolve any program conflicts. The members will work together on design, access, resources, and logistics to achieve shared goals for cost and schedule.

This role can be based out of the project offices at London, Euston or Birmingham, Snow Hill. You should live within a reasonable commuting distance of the stated work location. If not, please include a cover note outlining your relocation plans.

As Rail Systems Lead Design Manager, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Systems Integration & Design management
  • Coordinate technical interfaces between Track systems, Main Works Contractors, Design Partners and Alliance members
  • Support integration of multidisciplinary design deliverables across the Rail Systems programme.
  • Facilitate resolution of engineering, programme and design interface issues.
  • Support engineering governance and design assurance activities across the Alliance.
  • Design Management and Spatial Coordination
  • Lead and manage the spatial coordination of rail systems designs produced by design partners, Rail System Alliance members and third parties.
  • Establish, contribute and maintain robust design coordination processes as required
  • Manage resolution of design clashes, interface issues, and spatial conflicts to support efficient project delivery
  • Chair and facilitate design coordination meetings, workshops, and reviews with relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor and report design progress and ensure coordinated delivery in accordance with Client requirements, standards, and milestones.
  • Technical Assurance
  • Coordinate technical assurance activities related to spatial coordination and integrated design delivery.
  • Ensure designs are reviewed, verified, and validated in accordance with project governance requirements and applicable standards.
  • Monitor design compliance with Client requirements
  • Health and Safety in Design
  • Coordinate and promote Health and Safety in Design principles across all rail systems disciplines.
  • Coordinate CDM processes and production of safety-related deliverables
  • Ensure hazards are identified, assessed, eliminated, or reduced through the design process wherever reasonably practicable.
  • Facilitate design risk reviews and ensure risks are appropriately recorded, managed, and communicated.
  • Support compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and client requirements.
  • Support Client with Principal Designer duties
  • System Safety Coordination
  • Coordinate system safety activities across multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Ensure safety requirements are integrated into the design development process and appropriately managed through the project lifecycle.
  • Support hazard identification, safety analyses, safety assurance activities, and safety approvals.
  • Collaborate with safety specialists and stakeholders to ensure system safety requirements are achieved.

What do you bring to the role?

  • Extensive experience in rail systems design, integration, and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Experience working within contractor-led, design and build or alliance delivery environments is preferred
  • Experience working within large-scale rail infrastructure programmes.
  • Experience managing external design organisations and consultant teams
  • Strong understanding of design management processes within major rail or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience managing design interfaces and spatial coordination in complex environments.
  • Knowledge of technical assurance, systems engineering, and safety assurance principles.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety in Design requirements and industry best practice.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage complex technical issues.
  • Previous experience in a similar role with aligned responsibilities & accountabilities.
  • Strong communication, leadership and management skills, with a positive and collaborative approach.
  • Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required.
  • Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership
  • Membership of ICE, IMechE, IET or equivalent professional institution
  • The ability to communicate complex safety information clearly and concisely to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • The ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage stakeholder expectations.
  • Experience in a safety engineering role, preferably within the rail industry.
  • Good understanding of CDM processes and its duty holders
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance on design coordination matters.
