Building a sustainable tomorrow. We are seeking a Principal Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Temporary Works Centre of Expertise provides design and technical support to the whole of BAM UK & Ireland, covering a wide range of engineering applications. Our focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs, with opportunities to work on applications including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework. This role will be based at our Farnborough office, with a hybrid working schedule.

Your team: Permanent, full-time role.

Making Possible:

  • Representing the Temporary Works CoE when necessary at internal and external meetings.
  • Carrying out Matrix Management duties and Performance and Development Reviews when required and identifying appropriate development activities for matrix reports.
  • Liaising with and advising other departments and project teams within the Company regarding design requirements.
  • Being the key point of contact when appointed as Supervising / Lead Designer (or equivalent) on specific projects/bids.
  • Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.
  • Supervising others working on tasks within informal teams, whilst maintaining responsibility for the team's overall performance.
  • Ensuring that all chargeable work is identified and charges can be recovered through accurate recording and timely submission of timesheets/allocations.
  • Ensuring that feedback on design work is obtained, reviewed, collated, and saved in accordance with departmental procedures, highlighting areas where improvements are required.
  • Preparing/supervising the development of conceptual designs to ensure safe, practical, and economic designs in accordance with current standards.
  • Preparing/supervising the development of detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes, including calculations, design risk assessments, and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of 3D models and working drawings.
  • Checking/reviewing the design work of other staff members and external designers in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Summarising quantities relating to design tasks and preparing for pricing purposes when required.
  • Maintaining the design task database with up-to-date and relevant data for all tasks assigned to you and under your supervision.
  • Taking a proactive approach to training and continuing professional development of yourself and others.
  • Supporting the identification of areas for improvement to departmental processes.
  • Supporting the delivery of training for TWC, ATWE, and Supervisors training programme courses.

What do you bring to the role?

  • Proven experience and expertise in civil engineering design structures, including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, façade retention, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework.
  • Proven experience in construction methods and processes.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
  • Experience and knowledge of digital construction processes.
  • Chartered membership of ICE and/or IStructE or an accepted alternative professional institution or demonstrable experience and responsibility at a level at least equivalent to a Chartered Engineer.

The following are desirable requirements:

  • Construction site/project experience.
  • Familiarity with modern methods of construction (e.g., DfMA etc.).
  • Ability to manage a team.
