We are seeking a Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Temporary Works Centre of Expertise provides design and technical support to the whole of BAM UK & Ireland, covering a wide range of engineering applications. We are a diverse and well-established team with a strong focus on personal development and supporting progression towards professional qualifications.
Working as part of a team, you will develop temporary works design solutions for live projects and tenders. Our focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs, and you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of applications, including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework. This role can be based at our Leeds, Solihull, or Kilsyth, Scotland office, with a hybrid working schedule.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Liaising with project teams with respect to design requirements and solutions.
- Representing the Temporary Works Centre of Expertise when necessary, at internal and external meetings.
- Being the key point of contact when appointed as Project Design Lead on specific projects/bids.
- Preparing conceptual designs to ensure safe, practical, and economic solutions in accordance with current standards.
- Preparing detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes, including calculations, design risk assessments, and sufficiently detailed sketches for the preparation of 3D models and working drawings.
- Checking the design work of other team members and external designers in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Ensuring that design work undertaken is carried out in accordance with Divisional/Segment procedures and that a high level of professionalism is maintained.
- Supervising the work of others within the department as appropriate, whilst maintaining responsibility for the completion of the task.
- Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.
- Ensuring that the workflow management system is maintained with up-to-date and relevant data for all design tasks assigned to you.
- Where applicable, ensure that feedback on design work is collated and saved.
- Identifying and sharing opportunities to improve departmental processes.
- Coaching / mentoring other team members.
- Carrying out other relevant duties as required from time to time.
- Taking a proactive approach to training and professional development.
What do you bring to the role?
The following are mandatory requirements:
- Experience in civil/structural engineering design for structures commonly required by BAM UK&I, which may include earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork/falsework.
- Experience in the use of a range of civil/structural engineering design/analysis software and draughting/modelling packages.
- Experience in construction methods and processes.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
- Membership of ICE and/or IStructE, or an accepted alternative professional institution, and working towards attaining Chartered Engineer status.
The following are desirable requirements:
- Construction site experience.
- Knowledge of BS5975 and an understanding of the role of temporary works in successful project delivery.
- Familiarity with modern methods of construction (e.g. DfMA etc.).
- Knowledge of digital construction processes.
