Join to apply for the Principal Design Engineer role at BAM UK & Ireland. We are seeking a Principal Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Temporary Works Centre of Expertise provides design and technical support to the whole of BAM UK & Ireland, covering a wide range of engineering applications. Our focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs, with opportunities to work on applications including earthworks, earth retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework. This role will be based at our Farnborough office, with a hybrid working schedule.
Responsibilities:
- Representing the Temporary Works CoE at internal and external meetings.
- Carrying out Matrix Management duties and Performance and Development Reviews when required.
- Liaising with and advising other departments and project teams regarding design requirements.
- Being the key point of contact when appointed as Supervising / Lead Designer on specific projects/bids.
- Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.
- Supervising others working on tasks within informal teams, while maintaining responsibility for the team’s overall performance.
- Ensuring that all chargeable work is identified and charges can be recovered through accurate recording and timely submission of timesheets/allocations.
- Obtaining, reviewing, collating, and saving feedback on design work in accordance with departmental procedures.
- Preparing/supervising the development of conceptual and detailed designs in accordance with current standards and codes.
- Checking/reviewing the design work of other staff members and external designers.
- Summarising quantities relating to design tasks for pricing purposes when required.
- Maintaining the design task database with up-to-date and relevant data.
- Taking a proactive approach to training and continuing professional development.
- Supporting the identification of areas for improvement in departmental processes.
- Supporting the delivery of training for TWC, ATWE, and Supervisors training programme courses.
What do you bring to the role?
- Proven experience and expertise in civil engineering design structures.
- Proven experience in construction methods and processes.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
- Experience and knowledge of digital construction processes.
- Chartered membership of ICE and/or IStructE or equivalent experience.
Desirable Requirements:
- Construction site/project experience.
- Familiarity with modern methods of construction (e.g., DfMA).
- Ability to manage a team.
