We are seeking a Design Engineer to join the BAM UK & Ireland Temporary Works Centre of Expertise. The Centre provides design and technical support to the entire BAM UK & Ireland network, working on a wide range of engineering applications. The team values personal development and supports progression toward professional qualifications. Working as part of a team, you will develop temporary works design solutions for live projects and tenders. The focus is on delivering safe, practical, economical, and sustainable designs across a wide range of applications, including earthworks, earth‑retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber, and formwork/falsework. This role can be based at our Leeds, Solihull, or Kilsyth (Scotland) office, with a hybrid working schedule.
Your Responsibilities
- Liaising with project teams regarding design requirements and solutions.
- Representing the Centre at internal and external meetings when required.
- Acting as the key point of contact when appointed as Project Design Lead on specific projects or bids.
- Preparing conceptual designs that ensure safe, practical, and economical solutions in accordance with current standards.
- Preparing detailed designs, including calculations, design risk assessments, and sufficiently detailed sketches for 3D models and working drawings.
- Checking the design work of other team members and external designers as per departmental procedures.
- Ensuring all design work follows Divisional/Segment procedures and upholds a high level of professionalism.
- Supervising the work of others within the department as appropriate, while retaining responsibility for task completion.
- Arranging and undertaking site visits when appropriate.
- Maintaining the workflow management system with up‑to‑date, relevant data for all design tasks assigned to you.
- Collating and saving feedback on design work where applicable.
- Identifying and sharing opportunities to improve departmental processes.
- Coaching and mentoring other team members.
- Carrying out other relevant duties as required from time to time.
- Taking a proactive approach to training and professional development.
What do you bring to the role?
Mandatory Requirements
- Experience in civil/structural engineering design for structures commonly required by BAM UK & I, including earthworks, earth‑retaining structures, foundations, structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, timber and formwork/falsework.
- Experience with a range of civil/structural engineering design/analysis software and drafting/modelling packages.
- Experience in construction methods and processes.
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related subject.
- Membership of ICE and/or IStructE, or an accepted alternative professional institution, and working towards attaining Chartered Engineer status.
Desirable Requirements
- Construction site experience.
- Knowledge of BS5975 and an understanding of the role of temporary works in successful project delivery.
- Familiarity with modern methods of construction (e.g. DfMA).
- Knowledge of digital construction processes.
