Building a sustainable tomorrow. BAM UK & Ireland's Infrastructure segment are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Carbon Advisor to assist in delivering key workstreams related to carbon management within our Infrastructure business. This role is responsible for carbon management on a range of projects and will require stakeholder engagement, whole life carbon assessment, and implementation of innovative carbon reduction solutions. Reporting to the national Carbon Manager, you will be responsible for PAS 2080-aligned carbon management activities across multiple flood defence projects located in southern and eastern England. This position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of critical infrastructure projects for an industry-leading client, driving substantial reductions in carbon through innovative and strategic approaches.
Your team: This is a hybrid role working on our sites across East Anglia and the Northern home counties.
As Carbon Advisor, you will be responsible for the following:
- Opportunity identification and management
- Develop and maintain a broad and comprehensive understanding of carbon reduction technologies and methods
- Plan, coordinate, and chair project carbon workshops and follow up on opportunities identified
- Work collaboratively with the wider BAM team and project stakeholders to identify and implement whole life carbon reduction opportunities
- Work collaboratively with the commercial team on budgeting sustainability activities to be delivered for each financial year
- Ensure the data requested for the Decarbonisation KPI is provided and manage the Hub’s performance periodically
- Liaise with other areas of the business to share carbon reporting learning
- Provide carbon specialist support to the commercial team for any scope changes, early warnings or other formal communications required with the client on carbon matters
Carbon assessment & reporting:
- Supervise and support the project carbon assessor to ensure whole life carbon assessment tools are accurately completed and submitted on time
- Liaise with the client’s carbon team as required to agree project carbon targets and KPI assessments
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to keep documentation up to date
- Report on project advancements, carbon reduction opportunities, and actions required to wider stakeholders as required
- Coordinate the collection of carbon assessments to periodically inform the client’s decarbonisation plan performance review
- Work collaboratively with the client and design partner on the annual review of the Decarbonisation Plan
- Ensure a full understanding of the client’s requirements for carbon assessments, data quality, and carbon verification, so the entire process is completed in a timely manner
- Support BREEAM assessment with carbon reporting evidence
- Provide monthly updates to the National Carbon Manager on progress
- Deliver site level training on carbon reporting requirements relevant to client expectations
- Support any preconstruction questions which are relevant to carbon reporting process and delivering value
Continuous improvement:
- Contribute lessons learned to the wider BAM business through sharing of case studies and other knowledge transfer activities
- Visit projects to ensure an understanding of the capital works and to build relationships with the project teams
- Proactively engage with the supply chain to develop relationships and keep abreast of latest innovations
- Contribute to, and be prepared to lead, on the development and testing of innovative carbon reduction technologies and methods
- Deliver carbon-related training and presentations to colleagues and external stakeholders
- Contribute to meetings about company carbon targets
Client engagement:
- Fully understand the client’s carbon requirements, contract conditions, and their implications to ensure processes are in place to meet those requirements
- Attend Carbon & Circular Economy Working Group meetings and provide updates on progress against actions on behalf of BAM
- Attend yearly action planning meetings to decipher collaborative objectives
- Attend the client’s carbon authorisation meetings on behalf of BAM
- Attend project-specific client meetings to report progress on carbon monitoring and KPIs
What do you bring to the role?
- Essential: Degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field
- Achieved or working towards a relevant professional qualification (e.g. ISEP (formerly IEMA), ICE, CIBSE)
- Minimum three years’ experience in a sustainability role, including whole life carbon assessment, ideally in the construction industry and infrastructure
- Familiarity with corporate carbon accounting principles, whole life carbon assessment, and relevant software tools
- Collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Good time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Proficiency in data analysis, with attention to detail
Desirable:
- Experience of working within the PAS 2080 carbon management framework
- Understanding of government policies and regulations related to carbon reduction
