A BAM apprenticeship is a full time earn and learn position; where you will be involved in delivering multi million projects. Leaving a lasting legacy and positive change in our communities.

On completion of a level 2 apprenticeship, you will then be given the opportunity to progress on to further learning and leadership training to work towards becoming a Works Manager of the future.

What will you be doing?

As a Groundworker Apprentice, youll learn essential skills to support construction projects, including:

  • Preparing and levelling construction sites.
  • Laying foundations, drainage systems, and concrete.
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Following health and safety protocols on-site.
  • Working as part of a team to complete a variety of groundwork tasks.

Youll gain hands-on experience while working towards a Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship with the support of experienced mentors and on-the-job training.

Some of our projects include:

The Sheephouse Wood bat protection structurewhich is being built alongside Sheephouse Wood in Buckinghamshire. The structure itself is a significant piece of engineering which is required to have a design life of 120 years. It is around 900m long, up to 10m high and will be four tracks wide. It also includes extensive safety requirements to separate the two operating railways and a green bridge built into the north portal.

The 56 hectare woodland is home to several different bat species, including the most northerly known colony of the rare Bechsteins bat. All bats are legally protected in the UK and the structure will allow bats to cross the line without being harmed by passing trains.

This initiative is part of a broader environmental commitment in the area, featuring new green bridges and extensive tree planting to support wildlife and boost biodiversity.

What you\’ll need

Academic requirements

  • GCSEs Maths and English grade 5 or above is desirable but you will have the opportunity to build on your academic achievements so far whilst on the apprenticeship
  • To be eligible for this apprenticeship you must not already hold a similar qualification of the same level.

Additional requirements

  • A lot of our projects are in locations that are not accessible via public transport so adriving licencewould be desirable or the ability to learn and have access to a vehicle whilst on the apprenticeship
  • Due to the nature of our industry, you may be required tomove away to workon a project. We cannot always guarantee that you will be placed on a project which is close to your home. BAM do support this bypaying a living away allowance.
