Balmoral Comtec Ltd, a division of Balmoral Group, provides surface and subsurface buoyancy, insulation and elastomer products and services to the global energy, defence, subsea communications and oceanographic industries. We are recruiting for a Graduate Technologist within the Subsea Test Centre Department to be an integral part of a thriving team, which produces innovative design solutions and optimises existing Balmoral products to meet the demands of our clients in an evolving industry.
The successful candidate will produce cost effective solutions to bespoke and standard product requests making the best use of their ability and the state of the art tools available to them. The jobholder should, when required, show the ability to work independently with minimal supervision at all times as well as show initiative and innovation in all areas of their work.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOBHOLDER:
- The STC Graduate Technologist shall support the technical activities and ongoing development of the subsea test facility.
- Working as part of the Test Centre team, you will assist with the specification of new equipment, contribute to the design of test programmes, and help review test data and client requirements.
- Collaborate closely with experienced Subsea Test Centre staff and the Test Centre Management team to improve processes, support innovation, and enhance the overall testing capabilities of the centre.
- Provide support to the STC General Manager and Lead Test Centre Technicians as required, developing the skills and confidence needed to take on increasing responsibilities as you progress.
The Subsea Test Centre Graduate Technologist supports safe, efficient, and high-quality testing operations within the facility. The role contributes to Balmoral’s strong safety culture by following safety standards, preparing key documentation including test reports, conducting audits, ensuring pre‑use checks are completed and assisting with incident investigations.
A focus on quality is central, ensuring compliance to procedures, supporting with technical reviews, analysing abnormal data, resolving non‑conformities and ensuring equipment and procedures meet required standards.
The position contributes to smooth delivery of testing activities by helping to specify new equipment, developing test methods and integrating new systems into operations. It also supports continuous improvement by identifying ways to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and incorporate new technologies.
The STC technologist assists with equipment management including calibration planning, maintenance support, troubleshooting and assisting with implementing systems and/or software upgrades. They will help design and refine test methods, develop bespoke setups, and ensure test programmes meet technical and regulatory requirements.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Willingness to work flexibly and adjust working hours when required to support business needs.
- Other special projects and “ad hoc” duties as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Others with whom there is regular working contact include External Clients, Production teams, Inspectors, Project Engineers, Design Engineers, Production Departments, Q.C, Planning Department, Technical Department, and Maintenance.
Required skills, experience & attributes:
- A self‑motivated individual with strong communication and collaboration skills, able to take initiative, work proactively and contribute effectively across the Test Centre team.
- Computer literate, particularly in Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Good problem‑solving skills and a hands‑on approach.
Qualifications:
- Required: Higher National Diploma (HND) or Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline. Candidates with relevant technical, testing, engineering, or industrial experience, or alternative qualifications, may also be considered based on overall suitability.
