Balltec designs, manufactures and tests high integrity mechanical connectors for critical applications in the global renewable energy and oil and gas sectors. The engineering team creates technical solutions for the transfer of load in moorings, lifting components and subsea cable connections. As a member company of Venterra Group, Balltec is working at the forefront of the global energy transition, supplying engineering solutions to the offshore wind and the emerging floating wind markets.
The Mechatronics Design Engineer will work alongside other engineers and internal company personnel to engineer final design solutions, develop conceptual designs, support existing products and perform testing/analysis of new and existing products.
Key responsibilities:- Lead the design of electro-mechanical assemblies as part of multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Act as the technical authority and design/specify control systems for electro-hydraulic tools, including PLCs, embedded controllers, I/O, sensors, actuators, and HMIs.
- Produce and maintain key system documentation: 3D models, manufacturing drawings and design calculations (P&IDs, schematics, control narratives, FDS, interface specs, I/O lists, and test procedures).
- Integrate and configure sensors and communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, CAN).
- Oversee and support factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT), commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimisation of control systems.
- Deliver operator training, manuals, and after-sales support as required.
- Collaborate with other departments (Mechanical Design, Production, QA, Sales) to ensure effective communication, manufacturability, and reliability.
- Contribute to R&D activities, technical solutions for bids, and continuous product improvement.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, quality, and HSE procedures.
- Degree or HND in Mechatronics, Control, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- At least 5–8 years’ experience in electro-mechanical or industrial control systems, preferably with electro-hydraulic integration.
- Experience of basic controls system programming, ladder logic and sensor integration.
- Experience in mechanical design and verification (preferred).
- Hands‑on commissioning experience (FAT/SAT), with willingness to travel abroad for such work.
- Strong IT, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Full UK driving license (preferred, not required).
- Extensive experience in the design of electro-mechanical assemblies.
- Experience of PLC integration and basic PLC programming.
- Experience in the design and verification of mechanical components.
- Excellent communications skills – must interface successfully with other engineers, non-technical personnel and with customers to define and implement solutions.
- Demonstrated initiative in solving challenging problems.
- 38 hour working week (averaged over 2 weeks) with alternate Fridays or every Friday afternoon off.
