Balfour Beatty are looking for an experienced Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) professional with major project experience and a proven track record in a management role to join our Power Transmission & Distribution team as an HSW Manager, supporting our portfolio of substation projects across the North East and East of England. The role will cover substation projects ranging from Peterhead in Scotland through to the North East of England and down to Peterborough. The location of the successful candidate can be flexible; however, regular travel and overnight stays will be required with this role.
Working with the Head of HS&W and wider HSW team, the role will provide risk-based assurance of compliance, deliver expert H&S advice, and work collaboratively with key stakeholders to embed a strong health and safety culture through visible leadership aligned to the Zero Harm vision.
What you’ll be doing:
- Fully understand and support delivery of Power T&D HS&W Strategy
- Contribute to the implementation, delivery and review of the project Zero Harm Action Plan at business and/or project level
- Support the delivery of the H&S Key Performance Indicators at project & business level
- Support work winning teams with quality & innovative H&S responses for bids, proposals and PQQs
- Provide expert support to investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and BMS Requirements
- In conjunction with operational management complete a local and bespoke risk based Service Level Agreement with each project which is kept under quarterly review
- Undertake programmed support visits to operational project/s as per schedule to provide support and advice to local project team and operatives
- Produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record planned & unplanned H&S inspections which review project performance against the UK H&S Regulatory Framework & UK Business Management System (BMS) requirements
- Undertakes regular checks on Environmental Risk Management ensuring that appropriate risks and opportunities have been identified and are being implemented
- Support project/s to develop and deliver the Sustainability Plan (Involved Plan)
- Support and enable Design and Engineering Teams (External & Internal) to recognise risks and opportunities to implement the Principles of Prevention and HSW By Design through all Phases of the Gated Lifecycle
- Promotes Principles of Prevention and Hierarchy of Control throughout all stages of the Gated Lifecycle
- Deliver on-going approved H&S Technical Training to meet project/s and business unit requirements
- Actively supports the Project/s Specific Supply Chain Engagement Strategies
- Lead or be an active member of local and national H&S projects working at all times to scope of project and terms of reference
- Actively reserve proportionate time for H&S innovation & best practice research
- Support project teams with the development & review of SSOW
- Assist in the development of H&S Case Studies from signature projects
Who we’re looking for:
- Health, Safety and Environment Qualifications – Relevant H&S Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification)
- Broad experience of complex construction and civils projects
- Demonstrable track record of delivering in a management role
- To have or working towards Chartered Membership of IOSH
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel
- Ability to influence and promote a positive HSW culture
- Competence in incident & accident investigation
- Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework & UK Business Management System
- Ability to prepare formal written reports and publications on HSW topics
- Ability to undertake project planning, project management and work to budgets
- Demonstrates commitment to continual learning to refine, further develop and apply expertise to add distinctive value to customers and Balfour Beatty Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence
- Ability to engage and converse at all levels
