Join Connect Plus Services as a Tunnels Maintenance Technician and play a key role in maintaining the safety, reliability and performance of tunnel infrastructure across the M25 network. In this technically focused role you will support the efficient operation of M25 tunnels by delivering planned and reactive maintenance across electrical, electronic, mechanical and building systems. Working under the direction of the Tunnel Maintenance Manager and Supervisors, you will contribute to the upkeep of critical assets, ensuring they operate effectively under normal and emergency conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled and safety‑conscious technician who enjoys working in a challenging operational environment and making a direct contribution to network resilience.

Location and working arrangements: the role is based from CPS Hatfield and South Mimms depots, with regular work across the M25 tunnel network and occasional travel to other locations where required. Flexibility is essential: you will be required to attend incidents, support planned maintenance and participate in the standby and call‑out rota for Holmesdale, Bell Common and Hatfield tunnels. A full UK driving licence is required, and you must be willing to work in confined spaces, at height and in operational tunnel environments.

What you will be doing: You will report to the Tunnel Maintenance Supervisor and be fully conversant in the operation of electrical and mechanical plant within M25 tunnels, including under emergency conditions. You will be capable of operating systems both locally and remotely and will carry out safe electrical isolations in line with approved procedures. You will undertake planned maintenance and defect repairs across a wide range of equipment, including switchgear, transformers, pumps, fans, variable speed drives, lighting systems and associated control gear. You will complete all required records, including daily worksheets and maintenance reports, ensuring accurate and timely documentation. The role requires you to read technical drawings, carry out fault finding and complete repairs independently where appropriate. You will deliver civil, electrical and mechanical maintenance activities within your competency, including out-of‑trade tasks when required, under the direction of senior supervisors. You will operate vehicles for maintenance purposes, ensure that all health and safety requirements are met, and adopt safe systems of work at all times. You will maintain vehicles, plant and equipment in a safe and serviceable condition and complete routine checks and drivers’ records in line with company procedures. You will attend incidents and work in accordance with operational policies to support the safe and timely clearance of hazards. You will actively promote Connect Plus Services values, maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm, support sustainability initiatives and comply with the Balfour Beatty Electrical Safe System of Work. You will also work in close collaboration with internal teams and external partners, including National Highways and specialist subcontractors, to ensure consistent and high‑quality service delivery.

Qualifications and experience: Completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship and hold relevant qualifications such as City and Guilds Level 3 and the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations. Authorised Person status is desirable; training will be provided where required. Either hold or be willing to obtain certifications in MEWPs, confined spaces, inspection and testing (C&G 2391) and CSCS or ECS. Supported to qualify as an Approved Person under the Balfour Beatty Electrical Safe System of Work for HV and LV activities. Proven experience in fault finding using schematic drawings and broad exposure to electrical, electronic and mechanical maintenance, with pump maintenance experience an advantage. Good knowledge of current health and safety legislation and ability to carry out electrical installation work in line with current regulations. Previous experience in road tunnels or building maintenance environments will be highly beneficial. Strong customer service skills, confidence, the ability to perform under pressure, clear communication at all levels and a strong commitment to safety.
