Balfour Beatty is seeking an Assistant Site Ecologist to join the Bramford Twinstead Network Optimisation (BTNO) project, a flagship power transmission upgrade for National Grid, enabling new wind and nuclear power to connect to the grid. This role is part of a large Environment and Ecology team, providing on‑site support and advice to contract and operational teams on ecological matters, ensuring compliance with legal and company standards, and helping to deliver a culture of continual improvement. The position will be based largely from our new office facilities in Assington, Suffolk, with flexible working and subsistence arrangements for those working away from home.
What You'll Be Doing
- Provide advice and site support to operational teams on ecological matters.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of ecological management plans.
- Maintain relationships with regulators, clients and design teams.
- Ensure on‑site compliance with ecological legislation and coach teams in applying controls and mitigations.
- Maintain the company environmental management system in line with changing standards and legislation and liaise with senior team lead on required changes.
- Investigate and report ecological incidents.
- Assist with habitat suitability assessments and protected species surveys.
Who We're Looking For
- Strong knowledge of environmental management and mitigation.
- Educated to degree level in Ecology, Environmental Management or a related subject.
- Understanding of ecological matters and environmental law.
- Commercial awareness.
- Full UK driver’s licence and flexibility to travel.
- Understanding of the utilities/construction/engineering operating environment.
- Literate in MS Office – Word, Excel, Outlook.
