About the role
Balfour Beatty Multi-Utility is a multi-discipline utility business focussed on designing,
delivering and managing utility works for other Balfour Beatty Group businesses and external clients. This critical role will take the lead the management, coordination and pre construction support in delivering utility works to internal and external clients, and directly with utility companies. The role will report directly to the Senior Utility Lead and will manage the interface with multiple Utility companies on major & complex civil engineering and infrastructure schemes from feasibility through to handover.
This critical role will lead on managing the interface with multiple utility companies,
stakeholder, clients, designers, government bodies and highways departments and be
responsible for critical input and decision making in developing the multi utility design and scheme delivery. The role will require extensive experience in working with utility companies, and will be responsible for delivering a portfolio of schemes for BBMU. This role will be responsible for reporting to the Senior Utility Lead on monthly progress of schemes, resource requirements for the schemes, and handover of the schemes to the construction teams.
This role will work across a portfolio of major, diverse and complex infrastructure projects and will be a critical part of the Balfour Beatty Multi-Utility growth strategy and can be based from any of our offices in the UK
You will be required to be in a Balfour Beatty office 2-3 days per week
What you\’ll be doing
Responsible for:
- Leading on the management of critical relationships with utility companies on major (Β£250m+) civil engineering projects from design development to completion:
- Liaising with utility companies and other key stakeholders, with the aim of
driving efficiency, identifying opportunities, and mitigating risk for Balfour
Beatty and the wider project. - Obtaining estimates from Utility Companies (in line with the NRSWA process),
working with Utility Companies and our internal design & delivery teams to
challenge the estimates, identify value engineering opportunities and/or risk
reduction. - End-to-end management of the design and delivery of diversion and new
connections works being delivered by Utility Companies. - Providing expert support to our client (the Balfour Beatty business that we are
working for) throughout the project in relation to utility works - Providing strategic guidance and implementing best practice in how the Balfour Beatty Group interfaces with Utility Companies.
- Supporting the growth of the Multi-Utility by managing our Early Contractor
Involvement input across multiple schemes. - Providing expert input to Multi-Utility tenders in relation to how we manage Utility Companies and third party works.
- Managing and developing Utility Coordinators and Utility Managers direct reports.
Who we\’re looking for
- Extensive (min 5-10 years), recent, relevant experience interfacing with Utility
Companies in respect of diversion and new connections works on major construction schemes, preferably with multiple organisations and at a senior level - Recent, relevant experience interfacing with major stakeholders in respect of diversion and new connections works such as planning and highways authorities
- Capable of having challenging and technical discussions with senior stakeholders
- Experience of managing senior-level relationships with Utility Companies and third parties
- Educated to degree level in Civil Engineering or associated technical field or equivalent worked experience
- Hold recognised project management qualification such as APM-PMQ or Prince2
- Full understanding of the NRSWA protocols and processes in relation to utility assests
- Excellent relationship management skills, with ability to work across conflicting
interest groups to develop solutions to complex operational and commercial problems - Comfortable with ambiguity, able to tease out sensitive issues and lead cross-
functional teams towards solution
