About the role
Balfour Beatty are looking for a Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer to join their Power T&D Division in Derby.
Role purpose
Providing technical support, advice, strategy and direction to the geotechnical and geo-environmental team leader and wider team. You will deliver integrated site assessments that inform planning, design and remediation strategies. You will work with the project team, designers and subcontractors through the design phase to deliver safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives and then deliver these to a high standard. The role includes leading Phase 1 and 2 site and ground investigations and ensuring the production of high-quality technical reporting deliverables, and the development of practical, cost-effective remediation approaches to all projects secured by Balfour Beatty Power Transmission and Distribution (BB PT&D).

What you’ll be doing
Key Accountabilities
- To undertake Phase 1 and Phase 2 geotechnical and geo-environmental assessment as required for OHL, Cabling and Substation projects, from the initial feasibility assessment, through desk study phase and design development to detailed design & delivery / construction phase and scheme closure ensuring completion in accordance with programme, cost and quality requirements.
- Ensure the timely and quality delivery of designs to meet budget, programme and pre-determined objectives.
- Preparation of reports, calculations and drawings to a high technical level which are compliant with the required Client and national technical standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
- Checking of other work packages.
Key Responsibilities
- Design appropriate investigation works to allow for a detailed land contamination assessment and plan for remedial works to suitably remediate contaminated land where proven to exist.
- Lead start‑to‑end delivery of Phase 1 Feasibility and Desktop Studies, Phase 2 Ground Investigations, and follow‑on remediation strategy and verification works.
- Manage multi‑disciplinary ground investigations, integrating geotechnical and geo‑environmental in‑situ and laboratory based test results and other data provision, management and assessments.
- Produce GI specifications and schedules and, where required, contract documents, manage GI contractors and support with exploratory hole termination advice and decisions, installation design and details, sampling, backfill and scheduling of geotechnical and chemical laboratory testing schedules.
- Produce high‑quality and comprehensive geotechnical and geo‑environmental factual and interpretative reports, undertake contamination risk assessments with evaluation of ground conditions and design parameters where necessary.
- Provide technical input into foundation and infrastructure assessment and design, ground improvement strategies, and remediation schemes.
- Build and maintain close and strong working relationships with clients, consultants and regulatory bodies.
- Schedule chemical testing, analyse and present findings of contamination assessments clearly and support clients to satisfy planning and other regulatory conditions and achieve environmental compliance.
- Provide on‑site assessment of geological conditions resulting in design decisions for applicable engineering solutions.
- Undertake assessment on the condition and nature of materials and advise on their acceptability for re‑use.
- Prepare accurate costings, monitor budgets, and drive efficient and timely project delivery in the team.
- Appoint, liaise with and manage subcontractors to support delivery of their reports and deliverables.
- Devise training plans to upskill and support junior engineers in the team and staff across to be competent in areas of environmental and land contamination assessment including line management responsibilities.
- Working closely with Project Teams to determine and maintain common objectives and to ensure work undertaken is appropriate and in accordance with project priorities.
- Embed “Safety by Design” principles in all activities, including managing safety through appropriate life‑cycle designs that minimise risks to personnel and property, by ensuring that Health & Safety Regulations and Balfour Beatty procedures and requirements are followed in the design substation, cabling and OHL projects.
Who we’re looking for
Skills Required
- Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in geology, civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
- Professional membership of either the ICE or Geol Soc & working towards Chartered Engineer status with the aim of achieving this within the next year to two years maximum period of time.
- Experience of coordinating with government agencies and local authorities such as SEPA, EA etc.
- Strong, proven post‑graduate track record and level of experience in the civil engineering industry.
- Proven experience in both geotechnical and geo‑environmental project delivery.
- Strong technical report writing skills, including Phase 1 & 2 desk study and GIR assessments.
- Working knowledge of remediation processes and environmental modelling.
- Practical understanding of ground conditions and foundation types and behaviour.
- Experience of the supervision and/or monitoring of sub‑contractors.
- Proven experience of the design of large scale civil engineering works.
- Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or geotechnical engineering works.
- IT literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel).
- Extensive experience of geotechnical design software including slope and retention design packages.
