About the role

Do you want to be at the forefront of one of the world's most ambitious sustainability initiatives? Balfour Beatty have created iconic buildings and infrastructure all over the world over the past 115 years redefining excellence and setting the industry benchmark with every project. As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK's first decarbonised industrial cluster. Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Quantity Surveyor to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

What you'll be doing

  • Work Location: Project based role complying with the Company's flexible working policies - 4 days onsite, 1 day remote.
  • Experienced QS who has a track record in managing all costs and income within their area of responsibility.
  • They seek to minimise the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality.
  • Preferably, they will be a Chartered Member of the RICS, CICES or CIOB or working to achieve in the near future.
  • Experience of managing a small team of commercial staff as well as mentoring others on their journey to becoming professionally qualified is desirable.
  • They will maintain their Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Dimensions

  • Financial: Manages all costs and income within their area of responsibility.
  • Organisational: Direct reports could include Apprentice QS, Trainee QS, Graduate or Assistant QSs.

Interfaces

  • Internal: Commercial and wider Project Team.
  • External: Supply Chain, Customers, Stakeholders, Professional and Industry Bodies.

Accountabilities

  • Governance: Has a good knowledge of and adheres to the Company's governance requirements and maximises LEAN/digital opportunities.
  • Commercial Management and Administration: Requests information and systematically checks data, prepares Activity Schedules, Resource Schedules & analyses tender documents, critically appraises, estimates and negotiates the above with 3rd parties, reviews complex contract programmes such as Time-Location, assists with the preparation of delay and disruption programmes, monitors subcontract activities, measures and responds appropriately, prepares Internal reports, commercial progress and financial reconciliation and reports to senior project staff.
  • Customer/Change Management: Understanding of the Customer Contract and undertakes customer and stakeholder management, analyses rates & prices, agreement of variations and or compensation events as required, prepares, submits and negotiates claims when required, manages commercial aspects with Customer and Stakeholders for their area of responsibility.
  • Procurement: Undertakes constructability analyses using construction programmes, prepares procurement programme and helps develop the strategy.
  • Development, Recruitment and Retention: Supports the recruitment, supervision and development of team members.

Who we're looking for

  • Essentials: BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying or equivalent.
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or working towards).
  • CSCS Card (Professional Qualified Person).
