About the role
Balfour Beatty is recruiting for a Principal Civil Designer to join their Power T&D team in Scotland.
Role purpose: To collaborate with project teams, designers, and subcontractors during the design phase to deliver safe and appropriate scope of works aligned with project objectives. Take responsibility for design delivery and suitability across Power T&D construction projects, focusing on Substations Civils. Provide constructability and sequencing advice for civil design in Power T&D. Engage in bid development, tenders, and innovation projects with the Design Lead and Design Delivery Manager. We welcome full-time, part-time, and job share candidates, offering flexible working arrangements.
What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:- Manage the design and coordination of civil designs for substation projects, from feasibility to detail design, installation, and removal.
- Ensure timely, high-quality design delivery, preparing reports, calculations, and drawings compliant with client and national standards (BS/Eurocodes/ENA).
- Understand and incorporate client requirements, even if not explicitly stated, and contribute to robust pricing and design solutions.
- Assess and identify design and temporary works requirements, including: Drive a Safety by Design approach.
- Lead civil project designs such as reinforced concrete, site design, land development, drainage, and structures.
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and legal standards.
- Perform technical quality assurance and approve designs as permitted.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Assist in tender processes, scope interpretation, and advice.
- Apply procedures and manuals aligned with QA standards.
- Mentor team members and support policy development.
- Act as CDAE or similar role when needed.
- Support engineering design delivery, software use, and development of design aids.
- Manage output and delivery of design drawings.
- Interacts with PT&D Designers, Project teams, Sub-contractors, Clients, and Local Authorities.
Who we're looking for
Skills Required:- Degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering; Chartered Engineer preferred (ICE or IStructE).
- Post-graduate civil engineering experience.
- Experience supervising sub-consultants/subcontractors.
- Proven civil engineering design experience.
- Management of civil or geotechnical design projects.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, CAD, Tekla Tedds.
- Experience with National Grid standards and BIM (PAS1192, ISO16950).
- Additional skills include strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
