The role can be based from any UK regional offices across England and Scotland, with travel to Devonport required once a month. Role Purpose To manage the mechanical design solutions for Devonport, ensuring integration, technical assurance, compliance, health, safety, and sustainability of design and engineering, enabling defect-free handover for operational service, delivered to programme and budget. Due to the nature of our projects, individuals must hold full work rights within the UK and be eligible for SC level Security Clearance. What you\’ll be doing As Design Manager, your responsibilities include: Managing mechanical design to provide effective solutions. Attending site meetings, workshops, and surveys. Ensuring effective utilization and cost recovery of staff in line with resource requirements. Managing and evaluating the competency, capability, training, and development of direct reports, trainees, and graduates. Design Delivery Developing and implementing design proposals that meet customer requirements and budget constraints, and presenting these to stakeholders. Chairing and managing design and technical review workshops and meetings. Managing, creating, and reviewing requisition specifications for equipment. Developing strategies and guidance on buildability, operability, maintainability, and de-constructability of designs for operations teams. Reviewing and approving manufacturing documentation. Who we\’re looking for Proven experience at a senior level in delivering engineering services and implementing design strategies. Minimum of ten years’ experience. Leadership skills to deliver design services timely with a customer focus. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective relationship building under time pressure. Experience in leading or coaching teams is desirable. Numeracy and report writing skills. Relevant professional membership (e.g., IET). A valid CSCS card. IT skills relevant to the business stream; Microsoft Office proficiency is essential. Knowledge of codes of practice and regulatory materials for defence projects. Chartership or working towards it.
