About the role

Balfour Beatty Power are currently looking for a Design Manager - Roads to join their Power T&D team in Scotland.

Role Purpose: Manage delivery of Design on the Skye OHL and UGC projects working closely with commercial, production and engineering teams in both pre-construction and construction stages. Within our nationally significant construction endeavours, we tackle the design and construction of Access routes across challenging terrains. As the Design Manager, your responsibility lies in orchestrating our internal resources and supply chain expertise to craft sustainable engineering solutions tailored for overhead line or underground cable asset construction projects.

We are in search of individuals adept at stakeholder and supplier management, ensuring seamless design selection and implementation aligned with project timelines. Emphasizing standardization, safety, and functionality, we aim to embed these core principles into our work ethos. This role demands a hybrid work approach integrating cutting-edge Common Data Environment tools with on-site assessments to grasp project requirements thoroughly. While experience in Road Design or Project Management is advantageous, it is not mandatory.

What you'll be doing

  • Manage the development and implementation of design proposals ensuring they meet customer requirements including budget constraints, presenting proposals for approval to the customer. The design should deliver:
  • Safety in construction and use
  • Quality within affordable parameters
  • Ease of maintenance, energy efficiency with minimum environmental impact
  • Innovation to meet customer goals and positive impact on the local community.
  • Manage and ensure effective briefing of the Design Teams.
  • Manage Subcontractor design packages and technical approvals.
  • Lead the development and management of the design deliverables programme:
    • Ensure there is a clear schedule of design deliverables
    • Lead gate reviews activities to ensure that they are timely and appropriate sign off is achieved at each project gate to include appropriate communication to project manager and principal design manager
    • Lead the co-ordination and production of design data, design deliverables, reports and documentation essential to the project and contractual requirements and report progress against the design deliverables programme
    • Solicit and obtain advice and guidance on the "buildability" of the design proposals to the design and construction teams on all packages.
    • Liaise with all statutory bodies/authorities as required - such as town planning, building control and services e.g. gas and water.
  • Manage Change Control Process
  • Support implementation of the BIM Common Data Environment and Workflows.
  • Lead Value Engineering Process & application of Lean construction techniques in order to save money, reduce waste and optimise construction.
  • Ensure that learning and best practice is captured from the project with the aim of sharing it across the business stream and the business.
  • Proactively contribute to the Risk and Value Management process

  • Who we're looking for

    This role requires an individual with proven experience in delivering design services, both during design development and on site during construction stage. Successfully implementing design strategies into construction practice. Leadership skills in a matrix organisation are required to deliver design services in a timely manner with a customer and business sector specific focus. Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure. Good working knowledge of BIM is required. The individual will have experience within the most current forms of construction contracts such as NEC3. HND or higher Academic base. Relevant Professional membership with an appropriate institute, e.g. RIBA, BIBSE, IET, aligned to the workstream is recommended. Excellent IT Skills relevant to the Business Stream are desirable and Microsoft Office is essential. Numeracy and report writing is a requirement.
