About the role

Here at Balfour Beatty, we are seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager to play a pivotal role on our major healthcare project which is the Queen Elizabeth Hospital based in Birmingham. This is a high-profile opportunity to lead design delivery on a complex, live healthcare environment, with a strong focus on remedial works, compliance and operational continuity.

As Senior Design Manager, you will take full ownership of the design process, leading the development and implementation of design proposals that meet customer requirements, programme demands and budget constraints. A key part of this role will be managing remedial design solutions within an operational healthcare setting, ensuring safety, compliance and minimal disruption to hospital services.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the development and implementation of design proposals, ensuring they meet customer requirements, including budget constraints, and presenting proposals for customer approval.
  • Manage and ensure effective briefing of the Design Team, including all M&E elements.
  • Manage novated design teams and third-party consultants, ensuring they meet customer specifications and contractual obligations.
  • Lead and coordinate remedial design works within a live healthcare environment, ensuring alignment with statutory requirements and hospital operational needs.
  • Liaise with statutory bodies and authorities as required, including planning, building control and utility providers (e.g. gas and water).

Who we’re looking for

You will have the following:

  • Proven experience in a Senior Design Manager or Design Manager role on complex construction projects.
  • You will come from either an Architectural/Project Management Background within the Healthcare sector.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare compliance, regulations and working within live hospital environments.
  • Excellent knowledge of M&E coordination and integration.
