Balfour Beatty are looking for a Senior Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join our Power Transmission and Distribution Team on the Bramford to Twinstead (BTNO) project. The project office will be based at Assington in Sudbury. This is a site‑based role with occasional travel to other sites in England and Wales. A company car will be provided with the role.
The Senior HSW Advisor will support and promote delivery of the Zero Harm Action Plan, working with the HSW Manager to ensure the project is compliant with the HSW requirements of the UK Business Management System.
Project information: Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the replacement of the existing high voltage electricity network between Bramford Substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex, with a new 400 kilovolt overhead line spanning 18 kilometers. In addition, the company will also deliver 11 kilometres of underground cable through the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Stour Valley.
What you’ll be doing
- Embed robust HS&W objectives into project delivery and ensure management fully owns compliance.
- Provide high‑quality specialist advice to operational leaders, helping them effectively manage risk.
- Inspire a learning culture through open communication, challenge, coaching and mentoring.
- Support and influence Behavioural Safety initiatives such as Take Care and Making Safety Personal.
- Lead and participate in site inspections, investigations, and internal/external audits.
- Collaborate with clients, subcontractors, regulatory bodies (including HSE) and internal specialists.
- Monitor changes in legislation and standards, and help improve systems, processes and guidance.
- Contribute to training programmes, toolbox talks, specialist committees and tender submissions.
- Analyse performance trends and recommend actions that drive measurable HS&W improvement.
Who we’re looking for
- A qualification in Health & Safety (e.g. NEBOSH general).
- Relevant industry experience.
- Understanding of electrical safety — substation, cabling or OHL environments.
- Strong influencing and relationship‑building skills at all levels.
- Proven ability to lead investigations, audits and risk‑based assessments.
- Excellent analytical, reporting and presentation skills.
- A calm, empathetic approach when working under pressure.
- Ability to travel across England & Wales and work independently.
- Full UK driving licence and willing to travel occasionally.
Desirable: behavioural safety coaching experience, engineering background, sustainability experience, ISO management systems knowledge, IOSH/IEMA membership.
